MARKTHALLE IN
SANREMO
Entwurf • Design Calvi Ceschia Viganò Architetti Associati, IT-Sanremo
von • by Kira Sophie Kawohl
T he architecture of the Dopoguerra — the post-war era in Italy — produced some
striking feats of engineering that were called "organic". That means that the ar-
chitectural form of these structures was responsive to human needs. At that time,
Luciano Grossi Bianchi from Genoa planned the light-flooded market hall in San-
remo, spanned by a parabolic vault: until recently a doubted relic of those days, it
had become increasingly abandoned due to a lack of maintenance measures. Re-
cently, the municipality initiated a low-budget revitalisation concept, in the course
of which the local partners of Calvi Ceschia Viganò renovated the market hall and
incorporated a new stand and organisation system for the Mercato Annonario that
takes place here. A grid of equal-sized modules now assigns each sales unit a fixed
location on a raised platform. Thanks to the separate hot water supply, freshly pre-
pared food can now be offered at each goods counter and customers can be invited
to stay a while longer. At late hours, the inhospitableness of empty sales counters
disappears behind colourful fabric blinds: a highly pragmatic solution of pleasantly
unobtrusive aesthetics that creates identification without depriving the goods on
offer — or even the impressive 1950s building — of their effective functional space.
