D ie italienische Möbelmarke Driade wurde 1968 gegründet – zu einer Zeit also, als sich
das Design anschickte, die psychedelischen Dro gen erfahrungen der Hippies in f lie-
ßende Formen und leuchtende Farben zu übersetzen. Hilf reich war dabei, dass sich paral-
lel zu den synthetischen Rauschmit teln auch die synthetischen Kunst stoffe ent wickelten,
die das neue Design erst möglich mach ten. Man den ke etwa an den Panton Chair von Vitra
aus dem Jahr 1967! Auch bei Driade setzte man von Anfang an auf Kunst stoff und schuf
1970 mit dem futuristisch anmutenden Plas tik sessel Melaina, entworfen von Rodol fo Bo -
net to, einen Klassiker des italienischen Wohndesigns. Es folgten Longseller wie der einer
Theatermaske nachempfundene LoungeChair Nemo (Fabio No vem bre) und der Out door-
Klas siker Toy (Phi lip pe Starck). Zu bewundern ist die Dr iade-Produktfamilie, zu der bald
auch Möbel aus Holz, Glas und Metall gehörten, seit letztem Jahr in einem eigenen Show -
room in der Mai länder Innenstadt. Entworfen wurde die De pen dance von David Chip per -
field, der für Dria de auch als Berater tätig ist. Der Brite schuf einen bewusst minimalistisch
gehaltenen Rahmen, in dem vor al lem die form- und farbverliebten Klas siker aus Kunst -
stoff gut zur Gel tung kommen. Zur klaren Formen sprache des Inter ieurs trägt auch das
reduzierte Beleuchtungskonzept bei, das lediglich aus einem Raster von in die De cke ein-
gelassenen Lampenfassungen besteht, die je nach Bedarf bestückt werden können.

T he Italian Dr iade furniture brand was founded in 1968 – hence at a time when
design set out to translate the hippies’ experiences with psychedelic drugs into flo-
wing forms and br ight colours. What was helpful was that, par allel to the s ynthetic
intoxicants, synthetic materials were developed which made the new design possible.
Just think of the Panton Chair by Vitra from the year 1967! At Driade as well, from the
beginning synthetic materials were relied on and, in 1970, a classic item of Italian living
design was c reated with the f uturist lo oking Melaina s ynthetic c hair desi gned b y
Rodolfo Bonetto . Then c ame long-selling iconic piec es such as the Nemio loung er
(Fabio Novembre) inspired by a theatr e mask and the outdo or classic Toy (Philippe
Starck). Since last year, it has b een possible to admir e the Dr iade product range –
which soon also included furniture made of wood, glass and metal – in the company’s
own sho wroom in the inner c ity of Milan. The br anch was desi gned b y Da vid
Chipperfield who also works as a consultant for Driade. The British architect created a
space with a deliberately minimalist design where above all the classic items of syn-
thetic materials focussed on form and colour come into their own. Also contributing to
the interior’s clear language of forms is the basic lighting concept consisting only of a
grid of lamp sockets integrated into the ceiling which can be equipped as required.
