LIECHTENSTEIN BANK
IN VADUZ
Even such a financial institution with a long history is
allowed to break with the traditional notion of what a
bank should look like. It may even be necessary to do so
in order to avoid being seen as outdated sooner or later.
After all, this does not really change the values and prin-
ciples of a company. A successful example of a creative
transformation can be seen in Vaduz.
T he Liechtensteinische Landesbank – LLB for short – is the oldest
financial institution in the Principality of Liechtenstein. It all
began in the capital Vaduz with the founding of the Zins- und Credit-
Landes-Anstalt as early as in 1861. Meanwhile, LLB with more than
1,000 employees is not only active in Liechtenstein but also in Swit-
zerland, in Austria, the United Arab Emirats and, furthermore, since
last year in Germany as well. Despite its long history, the financial
institution sees itself as a modern bank, which is why the branch
offices in Liechtenstein were to be redesigned by Büro Matt Architek-
ten – including the headquarters located in Vaduz two years ago. The
extensive conversion work, which had to be carried out there while
the offices were in operation, also included the private customer sec-
tor, the consultation rooms, the 24-hour zone and the former express
cash desk. Particularly worthy of mention, however, is the redesign of
the counter hall, where the interior design concept of the architects
comes into its own. The idea was to give the bank the character
of a studio – open, relaxed, unconventional. That is why customer
contact here takes place not only face to face but also shoulder to
shoulder, which contributes to the relaxed and informal atmosphere.
The hall, which is lit by a glass roof, has an open design, while the
seamless flooring and glass walls to the consulting rooms create a
sense of space and transparency. The generous spatial impression is
reinforced not least by the furnishings, which are deliberately low in
height. Only the green back wall at one of the work desks rises up
higher. The most striking element in the room, however, is the filigree
wooden construction made of ash wood, which, thanks to sophisti-
cated plug-in connections, develops into a large spatial sculpture in
the atrium and connects the three floors of the building vertically. The
frame, which is also used as the construction principle for various
room dividers and shelves, has integrated boxes with hanging plants,
