ARCHIVE OF THE FUTURE
IN LICHTENFELS
Peter Haimerl creates gems in rural Bavaria! The Munich
architect is known for his surprising concepts. In 2014,

he designed the underground concert hall in Blaibach. In
2 2 1 1 2023, his Archive opened in Lichtenfels: above ground a
steel-and-glass pavilion, in front of it two steel willows as

below ground, a basement with the aesthetics of a shell.

L ichtenfels in Upper Franconia is a former basket-weaving town.
The art of wickerwork once made the town rich. Decorated faça-
des still reflect this. However, the building at Marktplatz 2 fell incre-

for their planned Archive of the Future. The Lichtenfels entrepreneurs,
who work in the field of 3D metal-printing technology, wanted to use
it to demonstrate the possibilities for transforming the area – from a
9 9 11 11 tradition of craftsmanship to digitalization. The Archive of the Future
was to become a venue for activities and communication, with offices,
an exhibition space and a lecture hall where initiatives and future-

their architect in Peter Haimerl. He had the old building, which could
no longer be saved, demolished. A massive base plate now traces its

against the neighbouring half-timbered house. Much more eye-catching
than the pavilion itself are the two 12-metre-high willow trees made of

makers and – at least from the outside and more than the architectu-
re – the actual distinguishing marks of the Archive of the Future. The
shiny golden sculptures were developed with the help of a growth algo-
rithm and realized using rectangular tubes, robotic welding technology
and a duplex coating process. The contours of the steel trees and the
new building subtly correspond to the former volume of the previous
building. The basement level holds a surprise. The basement, with its
