A ls Teil der Metropolregion Sydney ist Parramatta aktuell mit der Neustrukturierung
der australischen Innenstadt befasst. Auf drei Hektar Stadtgebiet entstand bereits
neben Büro- und Einzelhandelsgebäuden am begrünten Parramatta Square ein Anbau für
das historische Rathaus. Als Ergänzung zum Bestand realisierten die Planer von Manuelle
Gautrand einen in seiner Strahlkraft eigenständigen Erweiterungsbau. Um den neuen
Rathauskomplex zu einem lebendigen, kulturell und gesellschaftlich relevanten Ort zu
machen, entschied man sich neben der Einrichtung eines neuen Ratssaals und Stadtver-
waltungsbüros für den Einzug der Stadtbücherei, eines Veranstaltungsraumes wie auch
Ausstellungs- und Forschungsräumen zur Bewahrung des kulturellen Erbes der Ureinwoh-
ner. Entstanden ist ein zeitgemäßer Neubau, dessen weithin auffällige Gebäudeform eine
passive Belüftung möglich macht. Zudem wurde die prismatische Dachstruktur genauso
wie die Glasfronten so ausgerichtet, dass keine direkte Sonneneinstrahlung das Gebäude
erwärmt und dennoch Sichtbeziehung mit dem städtischen Raum aufgenommen werden
kann. Das Interieur ist unterdessen bestimmt von der formellen Qualität der Dachhaut
und terrassenartig organisiert, sodass nutzungsgleiche Geschosse in direkter Kommunika-
tion zueinander stehen. Der Innenausbau entspricht dabei der äußeren Erscheinung und
zeugt vom Mut zu kräftigen Farben und klaren Geometrien.
A s part of the Sydney metropolitan area, Parramatta is currently restructuring its
city centre. In addition to office- and retail buildings, an extension to the histo-
ric town hall has already been built on three hectares next to the green Parramatta
Square. The planners of Manuele Gautrand planned an extension that is independent
in its radiance as a supplement to the existing buildings. To make the new city hall
complex a vibrant, culturally and socially relevant place, it was decided to establish
a new council chamber and city administration offices, as well as to integrate the city
library, an event space and exhibition- and research rooms for the preservation of the
cultural heritage of the aborigines. The result is a contemporary new building whose
eye-catching shape makes passive ventilation possible. In addition, the prismatic roof
structure, as were the glass fronts, was aligned in such a way that no direct sunlight
heats the building, while still allowing visual contact with the urban space. Meanwhile,
the interior is defined by the formal quality of the roof membrane and is organized
in terraces, so that floors with the same use are in direct communication with each
other. The interior design corresponds to the external appearance and demonstrates
the courage to use bold colours and clear geometries.
