WINEBANK
ON SYLT
Noble wines can be good money investments. This is
why so-called wine banks offer vaults with optimum sto-
rage conditions that protect the liquid capital from UV
rays and cork moths. Just recently, such a bank also ope-
ned on the island of Sylt. The room concept by Form-
wænde from Lüneburg is a well-tempered bouquet with
velvety-soft depths, fresh accents and a pleasant finish.
I n times of crises, low interest rates and inflation, wine can not only
be a welcome fine intoxicant but also a good and safe store of value.
At room temperatures which range between 13 and 15 degrees, a con-
stant air humidity of approximately 60 percent and with the correspon-
ding beneficial light conditions, noble drops can be stored for a long
time and also experience a high increase in value during that period.
These conditions, however, are rarely provided in the cellar of one’s
home which is why WineBANK – a private club – makes safes with deal
climatic conditions available to its interested clients. Just recently, a
branch of the franchise enterprise has also been opened in Westerland
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan on the island of Sylt and the interior decoration was designed by Form-
wænde from Lüneburg. As in a “real” bank, the room programme is sub-
divided into public, semi-public and secured sections. On the ground
floor and along a wide glass façade, the sales- and tasting room inclu-
ding a wine bar opens towards the pedestrian zone like a foyer. In con-
trast, the split levels above and below the ground floor predetermined
by the building stock are “members only” and designed far more priva-
tely as “discretion” zones. As regards the material, a link between the
five levels is produced by a central spiralling staircase that, with its al-
ternating surface qualities, discretely points to the descent to the lower
level: As the heart of the bank, this is where a vault with 270 lockers has
been positioned. Deep, earthy shades of colour and heavy materials em-
phasize the archaic look which is clearly inspired by old wine cellars
and result in a strong, atmospheric contrast to the openness of the
upper levels. In all the sections, the interior architects have kept to a
consistent grid of recurring formats and colour fields and again underli-
ned the high affinity to the precision and solidity of the way the furniture
has been constructed which they had already demonstrated in early pro-
jects (see AIT 3.2022 and AIT 7/8.2022). On Sylt, the integration of the
old building stock from the 1980s has now also been successful. A har-
monious interplay of texture and volume that combines the different
