D as Primrose Potter Australian Ballet Centre ist neben der Australian Ballet School die
Heimat des 1962 gegründeten Australian Ballet. Um in den oberen zwei Etagen des
Gebäudes ausreichend Platz und ein zeitgemäßes Arbeitsumfeld für die gesamte Com-
pany und deren 79 professionelle Tänzer zu schaffen, wurden die Architekten des Hassell
Studios mit einer umfangreichen Renovierung beauftragt. Die baulichen Maßnahmen
umfassten unter anderem die Anhebung des Daches zugunsten einer neuen vertikalen
Gebäudeerschließung und eines Proberaumes, der die Maße einer klassischen Staats-
theaterbühne erreicht. Außerdem wurden neben Fitness- und Rehabilitationsräumen ein
öffentliches Café und eine dem Proberaum vorgelagerte, offene Bürostruktur für 110 Pro-
duktionsmitarbeiter eingebracht. Eine minimalistisch-klare Formensprache, Trennwände
aus Milchglas sowie blasse Grau- und Rosatöne sorgen hier für eine zurückgenommene
Innenraumgestaltung, die dem bunten Company-Treiben als eine neutrale Kulisse dienen
soll. Für die detaillierte Ausarbeitung der verschiedenen Nutzungseinheiten rückten un-
terdessen die Bedürfnisse der Tänzer in den Fokus − so wurde beispielsweise die zentrale
Treppeneinheit breit genug ausgeführt, damit zwei Ballerinas im Tutu problemlos anein-
ander vorbeikommen. Finales Highlight des Innenausbaus ist das Spitzenschuh-Rondell,
wo jede Tänzerin ihre neuen sowie getragenen Schuhe der laufenden Saison lagert. hs

B esides the Australian Ballet School, the Primrose Potter Australian Ballet Centre
is the home of the Australian Ballet founded in 1962. To produce sufficient space
and a modern work environment for the 79 profession dancers on the two upper
floors of the Centre, the architects of the Hassell Studios was commission with an
extensive refurbishment. The structural measures included the raising of the roof in
favour of a new, vertical building access and a rehearsal room with the dimensions
of a classic state-theatre stage. In addition, and besides fitness- and rehabilitation
rooms, a public café and an open office structure for the 110 production employees
have been added. A minimalist-clear design vocabulary, partitions of frosted glass
as well as pale shades of grey and pink here produce a subdued interior design
which is to serve the colourful activities of the Company as a neutral backdrop. For
the detailed planning of the various utilization units, however, the needs of the
dancers were in the focus – thus, for instance, the central stairs were designed to be
wide enough so that two ballerinas in their tutus can easily pass each other. The final
highlight of the interior design is the pointes-shoe circular construction, where all
the dancers store their new as well as worn shoes of the current season.
