A uf der vom Fluss Lea umspülten Leamouth Halbinsel im Londoner Osten befindet
sich das neue, nutzungsdurchmischte Stadtquartier der City Island. Herzstück und
kultureller Ankerpunkt des Quartiers bildet der Neubau des English National Ballet von
Glenn Howells Architects. Das Tanzzentrum mit integriertem Café und Ausstellungs-
raum fasst alle bisher über die Stadt verstreuten Standorte der Company zusammen
und bietet neben sechs Tanzstudios, medizinischen Einrichtungen und Büros auch
Räumlichkeiten für die Bühnentechnik, den Kulissenbau und die Kostümschneiderei.
Darüber hinaus verfügt die Ballettproduktion über ein siebtes Probestudio mit Tribüne,
dessen Bühnenraum für voll funktionstüchtige Bühnentechnik-Installationen eine
Deckenhöhe von 25 Metern aufweist. Seine Erdgeschosslage ermöglicht außerdem die
Vermietung des Studios für externe Veranstaltungen, sodass der Saal während Tour-
neen des Ensembles weiterhin ausgelastet werden kann. Sichtbeton- und Holzoberflä-
chen, die mit industriell-rohen Schwarzstahl-Elementen kontrastiert werden, kenn-
zeichnen dabei den Innenraum, der durch die Milchglasfassade über alle Etagen hin-
weg tageslichthell ist. Großzügige Klarglasfenster schaffen darüber hinaus Bezüge zwi-
schen den Raumstrukturen wie auch nach außen in die Umgebung und ermöglichen
interessierten Passanten Einblicke in die professionelle Ballettwelt. hs

O n the Leamouth Peninsula lapped by the River Lea in the northeast of London
is the new City Island district with a mixed use. The heart and the cultural hub
of the district is the new English National Ballet building designed by Glenn Howells
Architects. The dance centre with an integrated café and an exhibition room combi-
nes all the locations of the Company so far scattered all over the city and, in addition
to six dance studios, medical facilities and offices, also includes rooms for stage
technology, scenery construction and costume tailoring. The ballet company further-
more has a seventh rehearsal studio with a stand and a stage for fully functioning
technical installations with a ceiling height of 25 metres. Its ground-floor location
also makes leasing the studio for external events possible so that the halls can con-
tinue to be used while the ensemble is on tour. Exposed-concrete and wood surfaces
which are contrasted with industrial-rough black-steel elements characterize the in-
terior which is bright as daylight across all the levels thanks to the façade of frosted
glass. Spacious clear-glass windows additionally produce perspective between the
spatial structures as well as towards the outside into the surroundings and allow in-
terested passers-by insights into the professional world of ballet.
