TOWN HALL
IN MAITENBETH
Rolling hills, broad meadows and dense forests - the
Bavarian municipality of Maitenbeth is a scenic gem.
And now it also has an attractive town centre: the new
town hall by meck architects from Munich has now
given the historic town centre a new structure where
the church, the old post office and the town hall har-
monise formally and in terms of content.
T he Bavarian municipality of Maitenbeth is very popular with com-
muters travelling in the direction of Munich: on the one hand, it
offers unspoilt nature and, on the other hand, a direct connection to
the B12 highway - one can reach the state capital in less than an hour.
At the same time, the municipality has remained a contemplative

place: almost 2000 inhabitants live here on 3094 hectares. What the
place had been lacking so far, however, was a clearly defined centre.
The town hall was accommodated in a converted 1970s residential
building located away from the city centre. When a new building
became necessary due to structural-physical deficiencies, the munici-
pality seized the opportunity and had the new building planned on a
remaining site opposite the old post office and the church to strength-
en the village centre. The monument of the old post office, which had
meanwhile been cautiously converted into a community centre, was
thus given an architectural and thematic counterpart, while the church
square received a spatial boundary to the east. The two-storey town
hall design by meck architekten formally takes a back seat and, by
adapting the contours of the building to the sloping terrain, gives pri-
ority to the paths and visual axes of the historic development. At the
same time, the architects from Munich succeeded in merging the new
building into the townscape by subtly adopting existing architectural
elements: while the rough exterior plaster is a reference to the church

on the original paint coat of the wood balcony of the old post office.
Saddle roof and punctuated façade are typical of this place - but asym-
metrical window frames and wooden window elements give the new
town hall a contemporary look. Inside, Jurassic limestone, oak wood
and white walls create a calm atmosphere and backdrop for architec-
tural quotes such as the wooden strip structuring the walls at head-
height, which is reminiscent of the wall motif of Bavarian inns. The
opening with large double doors towards the lower town hall square
and the upper church square makes the new town hall building a
