One should be a bird – to see the world from a different perspec-
tive while flying! The drone pilot, producer and photographer
Ilanna Barkusky is able to do just that. When the 28-year old Cana-
dian with a recently acquired licence started her first drone flight
over her home city of Vancouver, she rather coincidentally discov-
ered the ornamental beauty of the sports fields in her vicinity. After
the successful attempt to capture a basketball court from the top-
down-shot perspective of the camera, she was able to finish a com-
plete series already a few months later. Colour Series now shows
graphic compositions of coloured and linear ground markings with
amazing expressiveness. For this, the flying photographer first spot-
ted suitable locations with the help of Google Earth. A contrast to
the static background is added by individual athletes who were
photographically recorded at precisely the moment of a move-
ment. The dynamic portraits always originated at the same time of
day – and are thus also contentwise connected as regards the light
mood and the shadowing. The sports-mad artist took her inspira-
tion from the character studies by the American portrait photogra-
pher Carlos Serrao – with some of the portraits shot in strong top
view and a trendy world of colours – as well as from the sports
photographs by the advertising artist Tim Tadder from California.
Barkusky’s photo series has meanwhile already been awarded six
internationally renowned prizes, among them also an International
Photo Award in the category sports photography. The young high
achiever has therefore been successful with her intention of mak-
ing the whole world aware of the colourful and pictorial aesthetics
of public playing fields.
