SPORTS- AND CULTURAL
CENTRE IN ROMONT
The actual building task had initially just been the con-
struction of a new indoor pool. What was finally imple-
mented, however, was considerably more than this: The
roof of the cuboid new building combines three swim-
ming halls, a sports area with fitness- and gymnastics
rooms, a wellness zone, a cafeteria and, in addition, re-
hearsal- and concert rooms for the music academy.
T he area of the former learning pool of the secondary school in Ro-
mont – a community with 5,000 inhabitants in the Swiss canton of
Fribourg – has been assigned a different use in the course of a refurbish-
ment. This is why a replacement construction was to be built in the di-
rect vicinity. The competition organized for it was won by the working
group consisting of Victor Figueras Corboud and GNWA – a young trio of
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan architects from Zurich. Together, they had designed a structure compact
on the outside which ensured the efficient use of the site and good in-
solation of the photovoltaic system. The architects benefited from the
location on a slight slope and positioned the swimming pools including
the necessary technology in the base of the building in southeasterly di-
rection. The result: With its glazed façades, the bathing area is above
the terrain. Whereas the pools cannot be seen by the passers-by, the
bathers enjoy the attractive view of the Alpine foothills. At street level
towards the northwest, on the other hand, are a cafeteria and the foyer.
There are three stairwells to access the sports- and music rooms on the
upper level. Despite the large diversity of rooms and use, just a few con-
struction materials have been selected to dominate: The architects thus
produced rather simple aesthetics with plenty of exposed concrete,
white floor tiles and wood. The only exception: The wellness zone has
been covered all round with small blue mosaic tiles. The swimming-,
sports and concert halls are unsupported – thanks to enormous ribbed
ceilings that, beyond their static function, characterize the spaces also
as a design element. This is because the joists are clad with wooden,
Grundriss Obergeschoss • Upper floor plan perforated acoustic panels which complements well the stark walls of
exposed concrete. Due to the ventilation ducts integrated in the support
structure, the skylights in the roof remain condensate-free. Even before
the completion of the new building, the cultural life of the community
had already been impressive. The multi-purpose hall situated right next
door, for instance, is not only a venue for sports events but also has a
theatre and exhibition rooms. The room schedule of the new Epicentre
Schnitt • Section makes the diversity of the Romont cultural offers perfect.
