I m Montréaler Künstlerviertel Mile End hat Thomas Balaban mit seinem Team ein
ehemals zweigeschossiges Bestandsgebäude aufgestockt und um einen Neubau
auf dem rückwärtigen Teil des Grundstücks ergänzt. Die Räume des verlassenen
Foto studios im Erd- und Untergeschoss bauten die Architekten im Zuge dessen für
die Veterinärklinik „Hôpital Vétérinaire du Parc“ um. Dabei kombinierten sie den
etwas heruntergekommenen Charme des Rohbaus geschickt mit betont reduzierten
Materialien: durchgefärbtes Corian für den Empfangstresen, transluzentes Polycar-
bonat für die hinterleuchteten Abhangdecken, roher Stahl für die Einbauregale. Den
unteren Teil der Wände – er muss gegen „tierische Beanspruchung“ resistent sein –
schützen Betonsockel, Keramikfliesen und Steinverkleidungen. Die effiziente Anord-
nung aller Behandlungs-, Operations-, Sprech- und Nebenräume um einen zentralen
Kreislauf ermöglichte es den Architekten, im Erdgeschoss einen großzügigen, zur
Straße hin vollständig verglasten Empfangsbereich zu schaffen, in dem sich die Tiere
und ihre Besitzer frei bewegen können. Als weiteres gestalterisches Element sollen
fein orchestrierte Ein- und Durchblicke die Angst, die mit dem Klinikbesuch einher-
geht, lindern: So erlaubt es ein gläserner Deckenausschnitt, bereits von der Warte-
zone aus einen Blick in die Pflege im Untergeschoss zu werfen.

I n Mile End, the artists' quarter of Montréal, Thomas Balaban and his team have
vertically extended an existing, formerly two-storey building and added a new one
in the rear part of the property. The architects converted the rooms of the abandoned
photo studio on the ground floor and in the basement for the veterinary clinic "Hôpi-
tal Vétérinaire du Parc". They skilfully combined the somewhat dilapidated charm of
the building shell with pronouncedly reduced materials: through-dyed Corian for the
reception counter, translucent polycarbonate for the backlit suspended ceilings, raw
steel for the built-in shelves. The lower sections of the walls – which must be resistant
to "beastly attacks" – are protected by a concrete base, ceramic tiles and stone clad-
ding. The efficient arrangement of all treatment, surgery, consultation and ancillary
rooms around a central circuit made it possible for the architects to create a generous
reception area on the ground floor, completely glazed towards the street, where the
animals and their owners can move without restriction. As a further design element,
finely orchestrated views into and through the building are intended to alleviate the
fear that accompanies a visit to the clinic: a glass section in the ceiling, for example,
allows a glimpse from the waiting area into the care area in the basement.
