BLUTSPENDERAUM
IN HAMBURG
Entwurf • Design brandherm + krumrey, Hamburg
von • by Katharina Diemair
In Hamburg
Decke eingestellte, geschwungene Wand schirmt Arbeitsplätze vom Spenderaum ab,
ohne diesen abzuschotten.
J ours fixes are an integral part of everyday university life. In Hamburg, students re-
gularly meet once a week for the "Bloody Thursday" at the Donation Bar. Together
with the Eppendorf University Hospital, the University of Hamburg has opened its own
blood donation room on its campus. Located between the cafeteria and the lecture
hall, students can sit together in a relaxed atmosphere, work for the common good
and donate blood that is urgently needed to replenish the blood bank. In order to re-
duce fears of the unknown and arouse the young donors' curiosity, brandherm + krum-
rey focused on an informal and symbolic approach when conceiving the interior de-
sign. Bright red letters, wires and lamp cables symbolise blood groups, veins and ar-
teries, plus and minus signs the rhesus system. While pendant lamps, furniture made
of black wood and loungers create a club atmosphere, black and white tiles indicate
the hygienic requirements of the room. The curved wall, set at a distance from the cei-
ling, shields workplaces from the donation room without sealing it off. Humorous and
striking, a slogan made of tiles above the bar refers to the question of blood relations.
A final glance at the online donation level allows students to follow the success of their
efforts, which has already been achieved thanks to the nonchalant bar aesthetic.
