M edical practices represent a complex design task in which aes-
thetics sometimes fall by the wayside due to numerous functio-
nal and technical requirements as well as furniture that needs getting
used to. Ten years ago, the architects from Stuttgart specialised in this
field with the intention of counteracting these circumstances. How
fruitful a close interdisciplinary cooperation can be is demonstrated
in this project, which is the result of a collaboration with graphic de-
signer Diane Nagel. The teams jointly developed a conclusive child-
friendly concept for the dental practice, which is based on lovingly de-
signed jungle illustrations and is intended to prevent reservations
with the dentist right from the start. The name of the practice is com-
posed of the names of the two dentists, Körner and Kohl, from which

the hippopotamus called KOKO emerged as a main image. The gra-
phics extend from the reception area to the waiting area to the treat-
ment rooms and are consistently integrated in the entire corporate de-
sign. Instead of using them only in an eye-catching way, they become
part of the overall spatial concept: KOKO and its companions accom-
pany the children in every room at eye level during the examination –
used sparingly and purposefully, so that the whole thing does not
seem kitschy or overloaded. Completed with wooden elements and fi-

nished in soft pastel shades, the design concept achieves a friendly,
reduced effect. All of the rooms were well conceived from the chil-
dren's perspective – right through to the reception counter: here,
thanks to the help of an integrated platform, the little patients are at
eye level with the dentists’ assistants while waiting. At a toothbrus-
hing station specially designed by the architects, which is stepped in
three heights, children of different ages are instructed in a playful way
how to brush their teeth. The ceiling, which is always the patient's

focus in dental practices during treatment, was also included in the
interior design: Above the treatment chairs, the illustrations are now
three-dimensional and cleverly distract the patients from the treat-
