OPHTHALMOLOGISTS’
CLINIC
IN DÜSSELDORF
The ophthalmologists Breyer Kaymak & Klabe treat eye

SOHOarchitekten rooms. An elegant ambience far from any oppressive
surgery atmos phere succeeds in creating confidence.
N o doubt that the eyes are among our most essential sensory
organs. Once vision diminishes, much of the quality of life is
also lost. In and around Düsseldorf, the specialists for eye surgery
Breyer Kaymak & Klabe help their patients to improve seeing at by
now have six locations, each with a different focus. The most recent
addition is the Makula-Netzhaut Zentrum Retinet where disorders of
the posterior segment of the eye are treated. Prominently located, the
practice is in the projecting penthouse of the five-storey Belmundo
office building constructed according to plans by slapa oberholz
pszczulny architekten in Belsenplatz. At the panoramic windows in
the waiting area, the patients may first enjoy the wide view to be dis-
tracted from their excitement about the impending intervention. And
apart from this as well, the specification for SOHOarchitekten was to
design a cosy, anxiety-free atmosphere. The team of interior design-
ers and architects were already in charge of two further locations of
the eye surgeons and knew about the technical requirements of the
construction task. Starting at the spacious reception- and waiting
zone, eight treatment rooms as well as the back office are arranged
along a central corridor. The room sequence is interrupted by an
additional waiting zone for spending time between two examina-
tions and treatments. The designers and architects made use of the
fact that most of the work in the practice is done in dimmed light.
Muted colours in natural shades of brown and green dominate the
scene. Custom-made installations form the layout, comfortable vel-
vet- and leather covered armchairs and sofas ensure relaxation and
indirect lighting immerses everything in a pleasantly warm light.
Overall, the choice of materials and colours on the area measuring
615 square metres reminds more of the lobby of a hotel in the luxury
segment than of sterile surgery rooms. Even in the treatment rooms,
it was possible to continue the style and to complement the elegant
furnishing with examination chairs which are unobtrusive and like-
