DRUGSTORE
IN TAICHUNG
For three generations, the Liu Family of pharmacists has
been providing traditional natural medicines. With the re -
design of the salesroom, the recent successor has taken a
step towards the future. Waterfrom Design was inspired
by nature and have mastered the balancing act between
tradition and modernity with filigree room installations.

Medicine obtained from nature and natural healing methods with a
holistic view of the human being are firmly anchored in the healthca-
re system of the Asian region. If you have minor ailments, you go to
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan the pharmacist, who puts together healing herbs individually. In
Taichun, a city of millions on the west coast of Taiwan, the Liu Family
runs such a pharmacy. With the handover to the latest generation, a
breath of fresh air has returned to the premises. For example, Toni Liu
wants to counteract the partially outdated image of his profession in
Taiwan. On his commission, the architects of Waterfrom Design trans-
formed the 120-square-meter store into an elegant and yet natural-
looking place. The name of the pharmacy "Molecure" stands for the
molecule of the plants, from which medicine is obtained, and cure, i.
e. healing, the pharmacists' aim. The first was the reason for the
designers to create an abstract laboratory landscape on the elongated
floor plan. The patient is received for an informal consultation at a
laboratory table made of wood, which is supported by a 100-year-old
tree stump. Medicinal plants grow in a glass box. Artistically draped,
moss-covered branches are suspended from the ceiling above, with

cylindrical copper pendant luminaires in between forming the static
counterpart. The two flanking walls are covered to the ceiling with
thousands of smooth, white stones, all of which were individually pla-
ced in cement. In the filigree steel shelving units which also reach up
to the ceiling, medicine is decoratively presented on glass shelves. A
centrally positioned spiral staircase made of perforated copper divi-
des the long room. It leads to a second level, which is in the front
designed as an all-round, suspended gallery running along the shel-
ves, and accommodates the offices at the back. Another shelving unit
made of acrylic glass, which extends up to the ceiling next to the
stairs, forms the transition to the actual salesroom, where the medi-
cine is finally prepared and handed over to the customer. Architect
Nic Lee has given the medicine that has been handed down over
thousands of years a setting, in which the relationship to nature is just
as clearly expressed as the claim to serve the human being holistically
