                                                                                    embrace its visitors to this day. Before the architect duo moved into the
                                                                                    former barn, or rather the former photo studio – founded by Johann
                                                                                    Kaspar Hiller, the first photographer of Bregenzerwald, in 1923 – on
                                                                                    Bezauer Dorfstrasse in 2012, the building had been standing empty for
                                                                                    almost 20 years. Too long for the front building, which unfortunately
                                                                                    could no longer be saved in 2021. Together with Hiller‘s grandson and
                                                                                    in the form of a joint building venture, they decided to implement the
                                                                                    necessary renovation and design the replacement new building. Hed-
                                                                                    wig Berchtel, his mother, had already proved to have a good nose by
                                                                                    choosing the young architect Leopold Kaufmann in 1963, when he was
                                                                                    just 31 years old and it was his remarkable first work. Even 60 years
                                                                                    later, you can still sense in every corner the boldness and stubborn-
                                                                                    ness, but also the care and dedication of this headstrong man always

                                                                                    flats. There are two finely customized flats on the ground floor, which
                                                                                    the architects now offer to their trainees. Even if you “only” live here
                                                                                    temporarily, you immediately feel at home. Upstairs there is a maiso-
                                                                                    nette flat that Hiller’s grandson uses himself. The flats all share the
                                                                                    same roof. The historic tripartite division of the building, whose history
                                                                                    dates back to the 16th century, into front house, threshing floor and rear
                                                                                    house, has been preserved. Innauer Matt are carefully continuing to
                                                                                    write the history of the house, leaving their mark on it and filling it with
                                                                                    their everyday life as a matter of course. Nevertheless, it remains per-
                                                                                    meable to the past; a deep interest in the people who shaped and cha-
                                                                                    racterize this place is palpable. For over 30 years, whole generations of
                                                                                    villagers and valley dwellers have pressed their noses against the large
                                                                                    window of the photo shop to study the latest photographs. Today, there
                                                                                    are architectural models and other small exhibits here, which are eyed
