HERZZONE ROCHE
IN LUDWIGSBURG
Roche Diagnostics has opened a new campus in the city of
Ludwigsburg, bringing together three company locations.
Around 500 employees develop and produce automati-
on systems for laboratories there. In order to strengthen
the feeling of togetherness between those in the develop-
ment, production and administration departments, a spe-
cial meeting place was created: the “heart zone”.
O n one side, there are classic office premises whereas, on the other,
there is a huge, open production hall – working environments
under one roof could hardly be more different. Roche Diagnostic’s com-
petence centre for automation solutions develops and produces inno-
vative laboratory automation systems for the global market. In order to
give the about 400 employees from over 30 countries in Ludwigsburg
the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas in an uncomplicated way
beyond the two worlds mentioned, a total area of 366 square metres has
been declared and consequently also designed as a meeting zone. The
design concept for this came from Studio Alexander Fehre. The founder
and name giver of the Stuttgart interior design firm had worked for the
Ippolito Fleitz Group for several years before becoming self-employed.
The young interior architect and his team have already won numerous
design prizes for their work. Directly between the offices of the admi-
nistration and the seven-metre-high production hall, an ingenious and
varied space-within-a-space structure has been designed that consists of
open areas and closed rooms, some of which extend over two levels.
This produces a lively and varied topography that creates different wor-
king- and communication areas. In addition, there is also sufficient space
for team events and company celebrations that can successfully be held
here. Two of the wooden buildings are connected by a footbridge. From
the upper level, the factory hall can be impressively surveyed. Wood is
the dominant material in this design, which can be seen in the structures
themselves, as well as in the wooden decks and platforms. Various texti-
les have been combined with this – in the form of coloured carpets, ver-
