UHLMANN OFFICE
IN LAUPHEIM
As is so often the case in southern Germany, world mar-
ket leaders little known outside their own field are hiding
in inconspicuous places. One of these “hidden champi-
ons”, the family-operated Uhlmann mechanical-enginee-

Summe vieler Details. Die Bürogestaltung gibt einen
Einblick in unser Denken und Arbeiten.“ lready in 2013, the globally operating manufacturer of pharmaceuti-
Kinzo A cal packaging machines which has been founded in 1909 had com-
missioned the Barkow Leibinger architectural office with developing a
master plan for its campus in Swabian Laupheim. Once building D6 had
been completed, where 300 employees now have their workstations, the
office premises were also adapted accordingly, in addition to meeting the
technical and organizational requirements. In order to achieve this, the
likewise Berlin-based designers from Kinzo developed a customized New
Work concept where flexibility, agility and networking are clearly in the
foreground. The resulting new room concept with zoning solutions suc-
ceeds in providing the transition to a new work culture and thus a holi-
stically designed place with which the employees can easily identify. To
involve the employees on this way as well, internal staff responsible for
the project first of all investigated the practical needs. On this basis, the
office concept for the area of 3,600 square metres was ultimately imple-
mented. Open and enclosed rooms of encounter alternate along a central
hallway of the elongated building structure. Stationary workstations are

dually mobile furniture solutions allow a dynamic, flexible and hybrid
work culture with options for spontaneous meetings. This well-thought-
out room constellation is supported by a sensitively devised colour con-
cept: Bright, strong shades of colour – the same ones that are also found
as markings in the production shed – have been used here. Besides a
strong recognition value, a feeling of solidarity is thus also being commu-
nicated. Spatially as well, motifs from the production facilities are taken
up. So-called meeting garages are enclosed with coloured PVC and can
be quickly and simply lowered at the touch of a button to produce spon-
taneous meeting points for the employees. A contrast is provided, howe-
ver, by the organically shaped furniture chosen for the common areas.
Wherever concentrated working is necessary, for instance, the colour
range remains unobtrusive and produces a visual reference to the buil-
