WET BEAST OFFICE
IN AMSTERDAM
Studioninedots knows the ropes: The Amsterdam archi-
tectural office knows exactly: Commonly used areas sti-
mulate creativity, communication as well as collabora-
tion and are the optimum breeding ground for new ideas.
This potential was to be exploited in the new premises of
Gerimedica. Three artful installation now characterize
the space and the entrepreneurial and creative spirit.
T he Westbeat construction really marks a transition: The twelve-sto-
rey building complex not only serves as the link between the cen-
Grundriss • Floor plan tre of Amsterdam and the Nieuw-West city district but also symbolizes
the transformation of public space into “super space”. Designed by Stu-
dioninedots, the building combines new entrepreneurship with afford-
able living space and, in addition, provides room for the neighbourhood
on the ground floor: as a flexibly usable free area right in the middle of
the city, as a neighbourhood centre, as a meeting point for dialogue and
exchange. Differently dimensioned arches, ground levels and stairs di-
vide this structure into open and more private zones and are also able
to integrate the workshop- and office areas of young start-ups – such as,
for instance, the one of the Gerimedica software developer. Likewise de-

absolute feeling of community: Three sculptural spatial elements are in-
tended to connect the employees with each other, provide room for ex-
periments, interaction and spontaneity and, in this way, make new im-
pulses possible as well as stimulate creativity. In this scheme, the de-
sign of these installations is completely detached from the architecture
which is substantially characterized by the construction including con-
crete arches. The installations differ as to the colour as well as to the
form and to the material and, thanks to an open interpretation, can con-
tinue to further develop in their function. The largest room sculpture,
The Beast, reminds of the surreal worlds created and represented by M.
C. Escher: stairs alternate with cubes and levels, enclosed and open ele-
ments ensure interaction between the protected core and the surroun-
ding space and leave the individual use up to the respective teams. The
organically shaped Jungle Stair with integrated planting links two levels
and serves as a podium for presentations as well as a place of contem-
plation. Last and half concealed behind light curtains is the Town Hall
– a place for retreating and confidential talks on timber seating. Wet
Beast thus not only stands for a dynamic setting but also for office pre-
