OFFICE METRO
IN DÜSSELDORF
An employer wanting to be attractive has to spruce
himself up for his employees. Especially start-ups in
the technology sector attach value to the outer appea-
rance. After all, the aim is to recruit (young) talents
from all over the world. And the competition doesn’t
sleep. The classic “outfit” in dull colourlessness has
had it. Today, it has to be “sexy” … the outfit of offices.
T nitely succeeded in fundamentally changing our communication-

and consumer behaviour. Their influence on our daily life is immense.
This even becomes clear in the field of interior architecture: Up to today,
no ambitious company is able to get past the standards of design which
Google & Co. have set: open spatial structures, variably usable commu-
nication zones, inventive furnishings, a colourful mixture of materials
and surfaces, playful details … Hence a casual feel-good ambience to
make employees completely happy. Metro Markets as well, the young
digital sector of the Metro Group, follows the principles of design “made
in Silicon Valley”. The Urselmann Interior office was responsible for the
planning and the execution of the interior construction and the furnis-
hing. The central role for the communicative exchange in the new Düs-
seldorf office is definitely being played by the open tea kitchen. The long
table with domestic green plants floating above it was made of birch
plywood. Coloured bar stools with upholstery made of recycled PET
bottles visually refresh the sitting area. An unobtrusive wall shelf con-

represent a recurrent design element in the office. This also applies to
the birch plywood which is the material for all the items of furniture,
meaning, among others the stools, benches, tables, cabinets and plan-
ters. And, of course, this also includes the small mobile gabled houses
where up to four people can temporarily meet in small groups. Whene-
ver the open-space zone is needed for larger presentations with then re-
quires row seating, the mini constructions on castors can simply be rol-
led aside for the time being. By the way, special attention in the indivi-
dually manufactured plywood furniture is on the easily removable con-
nections which makes dismantling the objects possible. In addition to
the open-plan offices areas, there are also a number of classic meeting
rooms which are equipped with everything that is nowadays needed
when it comes to technology. Acoustic effectiveness is ensured by wall
