MEDIA OFFICE
IN LONDON
Grundriss 2. Obergeschoss • Floor plan level +2
Do we work to live or do we live to work? Neither, says
the Zukunftsinstitut, which has been dealing with future
scenarios since 1998. A megatrend: New Work, for which
creative processes are predominant. Daytrip.studio has
designed an working environment with this in mind,
which is intended to provide space and inspiration for the
professional development of creative minds in particular.
W ork-life blending is the keyword for new approaches in the wor-
king world. Theresa Schleicher explains in the Retail Report
2020: "New Work focuses on the potential development of each indi-
vidual (...). In the future it will be all about the successful symbiosis of
life and work". This outlined trend describes what the London-based
media company was aiming for when it was concerned with the inte-
rior design of its three office floors in an industrial warehouse dating
from the 18th century. At the same time, the demands on the room
schedule remained conventional: open-plan office areas alternate with
inviting central zones and lounge areas and are complemented by
Grundriss 3. Obergeschoss • Floor plan level +3 work and meeting rooms that are separated by glass partitions. The
roof pavilion serves as a flexible communal space, which is also used
as a meeting and conference area. Despite the strong definition of the
floor plan by built-in units and fixtures such as seating arrangements,
floor-to-ceiling cabinets and monolithic, fully tiled kitchen counters,
the spatial structure remains open and flooded with light. In addition,
the planners of Daytrip.studio gave the offices an undogmatic and col-
lage-like overall look, which testifies to a newly won desire for opu-
lence and scene-like staging. Each area is worth a trend-conscious Ins-
tagram post: vintage finds from the 1970s and 1960s such as Dieter
Rams' RZ 62 or luminaires by Verner Panton blend in harmoniously
with contemporary furniture and classic upholstery fabric motifs from
the 1920s. Furthermore, a variety of materials such as plywood, pig-
mented MDF and linoleum floors are combined with high-gloss finis-
hes, velvet, parquet and soft carpets. Various powder and grey shades
and a limitation to the highlight colours wine red, coral and acid yel-
low have a visually calming effect on the interior design. By means of
nostalgic references and upscale living room flair, Daytrip.studio has
succeeded in creating a working environment that goes far beyond the
requirements of a functional office. For the planners themselves, there
is more to it than that—for them it is about "workplace design that ...
