BAKKEN & BÆCK
HEADQUARTERS IN OSLO
A monochrome colour scheme and Scandinavian
design are the ingredients Kvistad used when expan-
ding the headquarters of the up-and-coming Bakken &
Bæck company in Oslo. In the “Scandinavian Space-
ship”, carpets on the wall communicate in-space zero

Tobias und Gunvor, Bakken & Bæck Gründer worldwide. At the headquarters in Oslo, it recently became possible to
rent a floor right below the existing premises to accommodate the con-
stantly growing number of creative minds – on the top floor of a buil-
ding originally constructed as a jewellery workshop in 1930 according
to plans by the architects Bjercke og Eliassen. “Scandinavian Space -
ship” is the name the planners from Kvistad gave to it and covered the
rooms with a monochrome colour world. With a clear Scandina vian
line, simple wooden installations and numerous plants, zones were
produced where the increasingly demanded work-life balance is not
neglected either. Today, the office is accessed on the newly included
level on the 4th upper floor of the building. Here a soft light blue shade
dominates. Glass partitions allow looks into the meeting rooms which
– entirely coloured in dark blue or light brown – also look as if cast from
one mould. The cloakroom and the WC area as well were given their
very own overall colour: Up-to-date gender-neutral Millennial Pink enti-
rely covers the floors, walls and ceilings. As befits a young and innova-
tive company, working is done flexibly on the 600 square-metre office
area. Besides the classic workstations, loosely arranged seating groups
are on offer as are the so-called “sauna” on the top floor. This room
covered in dark-red carpeting and with a seating bench running all
around is accessed through a circular opening. Hand-made cushions
and the velvety soft surface clearly characterize the somewhat different
sauna as a place for retreating reserved for quiet working. Still in the
planning stage at present is the roof terrace adjacent to the kitchen. In
addition to the greenhouse which will be here, a real sauna and a whirl-
pool will be available above the roofs of Oslo. Until this is done, the
employees dedicate themselves to beekeeping in the open space and
feel completely comfortable not only at the newly designed workstati-
