HEADQUARTER DOPPEL-
MAYR IN WOLFURT
T he first tow lift in Austria, which was installed in 1937, was not only
an outstanding achievement for winter sports in Zürs am Arlberg
but the construction project was a real turning point in the company his-
tory of the manufacturer of the lift as well. After 45 years, Doppelmayr,
the medium-sized producer of work machines in Wolfurt, changed its
field of activity and, in the following decades, developed into a world
market leader in the construction of ropeways. Today, the company has
a foothold in 35 countries and has already built more than 14,800 rope-
way systems in 91 countries. Despite all this success, Doppelmayr
remained faithful to the community of Wolfurt as the location of its
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan headquarters. The only problem was that the old building no longer met
the requirements of the 21st century. Remedial action was taken by the
planners from AllesWirdGut Architektur since they designed at the edge
of the Alps a prestigious office complex which looks like an urban, visu-
ally almost floating ensemble of buildings with a linear design vocabu-
lary. Already from the outside, the basic concept becomes apparent: The
strict emphasis on the horizontal and the division of the compact struc-
ture into nine differently dimensioned volumes. The so-called houses
serve to structure the overall 27,000 square metres of the complex and
are linked by a centrally located access system. Thanks to various views
and atriums, the architects here succeeded in designing a light-flooded
circulation area with a high quality of stay to which all the side rooms
as well as the break areas and loggias, which can be used by all the
departments, adjoin. The very self-contained hallway system links all

ous exchange among the employees and the general orientation in the
building. Work is done along the façade with a panoramic view of
Wolfurt and the mountain range of the Alps. The interior design subor-
dinates to the impressive scenic backdrop and concentrates on what is
essential with contrasts of light and dark and a minimalist choice of
colours and materials. In this way, spatial cubatures and details such as
the pattern of joints on the walls and ceilings or the flush-integrated light
strips have an increased visual impact. For maximum flexibility on all
the office floors, the complete building technology was hidden in cavity
floors while the temperature is regulated with heating-cooling ceilings
and allows overall problem-less configuration of the areas regarding the
use of the sections and the room capacities. High-quality, strong, precise
and farsighted: With the construction of the new headquarters, the archi-
tects make the company’s basic values manifest and create an adapt-
able work setting which communicates a highly serious, focussed and
