M uli cycles steht für trendige Lastenräder made in Cologne. Gefertigt werden diese
aus recyceltem Stahl in handwerklicher Präzision. Das 2016 gegründete Start-up
verkörpert zeitgemäße Mobilität, Lifestyle und Nachhaltigkeit. Die erste Kleinserie wurde
mithilfe einer Crowdfunding-Kampagne realisiert. Gestartet ist muli cycles förmlich als
Garagenfirma: Als Montagehalle diente Omas Scheune im Westerwald. Stand heute? 300
Vertragshändler und Servicestellen, rund 80 MitarbeiterInnen, mit Muskelkraft und Motor
rollende mulis, „eingefahrene“ Preise aus der Bike- und Designbranche sowie eine – dank
Expansionskurs – nach Köln-Ehrenfeld verlegte Factory samt Factory Store. Es läuft! Hingu-
cker auf der Eurobike 2024 war der von Studio Besau-Marguerre konzipierte Messestand
(links). Passend zum Firmenethos konzipierte das Hamburger Designstudio diesen so,
dass die wenigen verwendeten Materialien im neu gestalteten Factory Store (rechts) wie-
der zum Einsatz kamen. Der Déjà-vu-Effekt ist gewollt: Die luftig-leichte Standarchitektur
– Vorhänge in sonnigem Gelb, zartem Flieder und Weiß – umspielen nun die Wände des
Ladens. Aluminiumlochbleche – ein Charakteristikum der Rad-Klappkörbe – bilden Teile
des Mobiliars. Die Kolorierung von Stand und Laden passt zum Angebot, das eigene muli
cycle farblich zu konfigurieren. Besau-Marguerre durften on top zum Interior Design selbst
eine streng limitierte Farbedition entwerfen: ein Mix aus Mintgrün, Türkis und Gelb.
M uli cycles stands for trendy cargo bikes made in Cologne, crafted from recycled
steel with artisanal precision. This start-up, founded in 2016, embodies contem-
porary mobility, lifestyle and sustainability. The first small production run was achieved
with the help of a crowdfunding campaign. Muli cycles started as a garage business:
the assembly hall was Grandma’s barn in the Westerwald. Fast forward to today: 300
authorised dealers and service points, around 80 employees, mulis powered by muscle
or motor, industry awards and design prizes, and a relocated factory with factory store
in Cologne’s Ehrenfeld district. Things are going well! A highlight at Eurobike 2024 was
the stand designed by Studio Besau-Marguerre (left). In line with the company ethos, the
Hamburg-based design studio conceived it so that the few materials used could be repur-
posed in the newly designed factory store (right). The déjà vu effect is deliberate: the light
stand architecture – curtains in sunny yellow, delicate lilac and white – now adorns the
shop walls. Perforated aluminium sheets – a hallmark of the bikes’ folding baskets – are
parts of the furnishings. The colour scheme of both stand and shop reflects the option
to customise one’s own muli cycle. Additionally, Besau-Marguerre were invited to create
a strictly limited colour edition themselves: a mix of mint green, turquoise and yellow.
