BACK MARKET LAB
IN BORDEAUX
„Vielleicht ist die beste Technik sogar die, The future is already here: Not only does Back Market’s
brand profile see existing (remanufactured) products as
die wir schon haben.“ an opportunity for true sustainability – the company’s
Back Market, Paris new lab in Bordeaux also follows this ideal. In its rather
unconventional design, Atelier Craft shows how the sim-
plest materials can be used to create a transcontinental
concept for offices, showrooms and laboratories.
T echnology has never been as advanced and as fast as it is today.
It’s can justly be called fast tech. But just like fast fashion, fast
tech is characterized by overconsumption and overproduction – and is
definitely the opposite of sustainability. First update, then upgrade. And
when your smartphone is too slow after two years, you get a new one.
Repairing, reusing or renewing is not as popular as higher, faster or
farther. The problem? It’s actually more social than technical. The solu-
tion? According to Back Market, it’s been around for a long time, the
reason being: “Maybe the best technology is simply the one we alrea-
dy have.” The French company, a leading marketplace for refurbished
electronics in Europe, focuses on longevity rather than short-lived pro-
ducts, on a “right to repair”, on high social and ecological standards
and, since March 2024, also on a physically realized corporate identity
in Bordeaux. The interior-design concept by Atelier Craft impresses with
its multifunctional use of an actually very simple material: Used storage
shelves are refurbished and repurposed into pretty much everything
a modern start-up needs. The modularity of the tried-and-tested shel-
ving system allows for customized designs for the space programme,
which consists of a showroom and also a laboratory. Whether as display
shelves, workstations, storage furniture or seating, the lime-green metal
structure has many uses. Even focused pendant lights, which illumina-
te the shelves flanking the showroom on the left and right displaying
repaired products of various kinds, have found their way into the fur-
niture potpourri of the storage rack. This is complemented by an exotic
colour gradient on the walls – from lime green to back-market purple
– and an equally colourful work of art. The company logo also finds its
place in the middle of the storage wall which presents itself as framed
several times (by the workplace structure). However, it is not only the
multifunctional usability that plays a major role in the choice of mate-
rial; the transcontinental availability of the standardized structure also
makes the storage rack an all-round design element for Back Market in
