LA SAMARITAINE
IN PARIS
After 16 years, the converted and extended Paris La Sa-
maritaine luxury department store opened its doors
again at the end of June. The Japanese SANAA office in
charge succeeded in preserving the history of the tra-
ditional, listed building ensemble and expertly guided
the store into the present with a new interior concept
and a contemporary extension.
T he time until the completion of the Paris luxury department store
which had been closed in 2005 due to missing fire protection, re-
minds of the BER airport put into operation last year. Honi soit qui mal
y pense: Yet the Japanese office commissioned in 2010 with the overall
planning of converting and extending the building complex between Rue
de Rivoli and Quai du Louvre definitely overcame some unambiguous
vetoes as to heritage politics with the design of its extension building –
all the way to a building freeze – before the council of state voted in fa-
vour of the plans and the construction project was able to be continued
in 2015. SANAA designed the conversion and the refurbishment of addi-
tional buildings of the same complex and coordinated three local archi-

in the hands of the Paris SRA Architectes office. The well-founded exper-
tise of Lagneau Architectes was used for restoring all the existing buil-
dings in line with the precepts of monument protection. Characterized
by art nouveau and art deco details and the wrought-iron craftsmanship,
preserving the historic elements was an essential objective. The striking
blue-grey iron staircase designed by Gustave Eiffel in the historic atrium
of the department store was restored with gold leaf across five floors. In
the process of the restoration, the main issue was to preserve the heri-
tage of the last decades and to upgrade it. Risky renovations – inside as
well as outside – were deliberately foregone. François Brugel Architectes
Associés finally were responsible for the integration of the legally reque-
sted 100 social-housing units and a nursery. SANAA planned an inside
passage as a longitudinal axis through the complex and the historic buil-
ding parts of the block designed and successively extended by Henri Sau-
vage and Frantz Jourdain and links the historic with two new atriums.
The US-American Yabu Pushelberg designed the luxurious, light-flooded
sales area of around 30,000 square meters. On the lower floor, the future
bus tourists will be led straight from the parking into the Paris microcos-
mos with 65,120 square metres of effective area, high-end restaurants,
