BAKERY, PASTRY AND
SCHOOL IN BARCELONA
L’Atelier is the name of the exquisite bakery, confectio-
nary and baking school in Barcelona’s Eixample dis-
trict. And quite rightly so. Under the aegis of Eric Or-
tuño and Ximena Pastor, creative, hand-made delica-
cies are produced which want to be aesthetically pre-
sented. Ideo Arquitectura turned the existing building
shell into a kind of jewellery display case.
I t is the glaze, the top layer which promisingly coats the contents of
tartlets and pralines which, already by the way they look, suggest
future treats. And it is the way of the presentation which makes high-
quality baked goods and confections appear to be even more desira-
ble. The products are presented like jewels in Eric Ortuño’s and Xi-
mena Pastor’s l’Atelier in Barcelona. Virgina del Barco from Ideo Ar-
quitectura gave the store including the “workshops” and the baking
school a truly striking look. “Pioneering, unique and avant-garde” was
how the clients wanted them. The architect found naked brick walls,
rough concrete, openly visible cables and pipes in Calle Viladomat
140. Virginia del Barco upgraded the building with a new layer, prac-
tically a new glaze. The ceiling and the walls of the boutique were
painted in the gold-ochre Pantone 118 shade. In front of them, at a di-
stance of 20 centimetres, a homogeneous polycarbonate shell was in-
stalled which characterizes the appearance of the room. This glass-
like look is to make the boutique resemble a jewellery showcase. The
gold-ochre shade shines through the semi-transparent panels and is
also found in individual room elements. A noble combination of ma-
terials and colours is thus produced. LEDs behind the panels myste-
riously illuminate the rooms with indirect light. Confectionary goods
are presented like jewels in the glass showcases of the six-metre long
counter whose finish consists of micro-cement. Two steel girders an-
chor the projecting, seemingly floating counter at a concrete column.
In modified form, the design concept of the sales rooms is continued
in the clean, laboratory-like bakery and the training section. There,
the partitions are made of the slender, 33 centimetres wide polycar-
bonate elements. Walls painted light grey let the former building-shell
flair still be noticed. In contrast, the gold-ochre shade of the ceiling
and the suspended metal grids is all the more present in the large
area. Even simple functional rooms, the WCs, are upgraded with the
golden colour aesthetics. All the rooms are carefully coordinated –
