S ein letztes Hoch erlebte der Marmor in den 1980er Jahren, als er im Kontext der
zitier freudigen Postmoderne unter anderem in Entwürfen von Hans Hollein und
Aldo Rossi seine Bedeutung erlangte. Gegenwärtig ist allerorten eine fluide Wieder -
ent deckung postmoderner Ideen zu beobachten – nicht nur unter Studenten, sondern
auch bei arrivierten Architekten wie Minas Kosmidis. Dieser hat sich bei der Umge -
stal tung der Konditorei New York Sweets auf Zypern ganz offensichtlich der entspre-
chenden Stilmittel bedient. Das Spiel mit Zitaten, Brüchen, Kontrasten und
Maßstabsveränderungen zieht sich subtil durch die neuen Räume. New York Sweets
gilt als einer der besten Konditoreien Zyperns, betreibt mittlerweile sieben Filialen
und hat sich auf exklusive amerikanische Süßwaren spezialisiert. Nicht nur der
Name weist darauf hin, Kosmidis greift auch bei der Wandgestaltung hinter dem
Hauptverkaufstresen auf die Verortung zurück: Aus unterschiedlichen Marmor sorten
stellt er in einer Art Collage die New Yorker Skyline nach. Das schimmernde Relief ist
ein Hingucker, verleiht dem Raum Tiefe und holt den Marmor – in all seiner Vielfalt –
erneut in die Gegenwart. Für Kontraste sorgen die rauen Betonstützen in zartem Rosé
und die extravaganten, filigranen Kreationen der Konditorei in den massiven
Marmorvitrinen kommen in diesem Materialmix besonders gut zur Geltung.

M arble last enjoyed popularity in the 1980s when, during postmodernism
always fond of borrowing stylistic elements, it became important in the
designs of Hans Hollein and Aldo Rossi, among others. At the present time, an
increasing rediscovery of postmodern ideas can be noticed everywhere – not only
among students but also by established architects such as Minas Kosmidis. It is he
who, when refurbishing the New York Sweets confectionery on Cyprus, obviously
used the appropriate stylistic means. The play with subtle borrowings, breaks, con-
trasts and changes in scale is found throughout the new premises. New York Sweets
is considered to be one of the best confectioneries on Cyprus, meanwhile has seven
branches and specializes in exclusive American sweets and pastries. Not only the
name indicates this, Kosmidis also refers to the location in the wall design behind
the main sales counter: From various types of marble, he reproduced the New York
skyline as a collage. The shimmering relief is an eye-catcher, gives the room depth
and brings marble – in all its diversity – into the present again. The rough concrete
columns in pale pink are a contrast and the extravagant filigree pastry and sweets
creations in the marble display cases come particularly very well into their own in
this mixture of materials.
