JSR HOUSE
IN WINNENDEN
A narrow plot that is located on the outskirts of Winnen-
den, right between meadow orchards and four-storey
residential buildings. On it stands a two-storey new buil-
ding, with its gable facing the street. Modest in scale, yet
surprisingly spacious inside. Jessica and Sebastian Rom-
mel have built themselves a house that represents a spe-
cial typology and spatial organization.
T he JSR House is named after the initials of the couple who commis-
sioned it, who are also part of the architectural firm responsible
for the design. Jessica Rommel is in administration, while her husband
Sebastian, an architect with experience in firms such as LRO, has been
working in the shared office since 2012 and managing it as a partner
together with Dieter Rommel and Nicolas Wagenpfeil since 2019. Com-
pared to the neighbouring constructions, their building appears modest.
It does not boast about its size, but uses the available space efficiently.
Grundriss Obergeschoss • Upper floor plan The property boundary is thus marked by an exposed-concrete wall – a
single-storey crossbar along the southern road forms a structural buffer
zone and integrates two rooms, including an outdoor kitchen. This creates
an inner courtyard between the crossbar and the house, a patio in front
of the main building which, instead of the gravel gardens common in
many places, transforms the front garden area into a place with a high
quality of stay. It is more than just a gravel filter between public and pri-
vate. Upon entering the building, visitors are surprised by the unexpected
spatial depth. The open-plan living-, cooking- and dining area is divided

the room extends to the ridge, with half of the roof remaining visible in its
full height. Two further air spaces are located above the kitchenette and
the couch area. Single-flight of stairs lead up to the upper floor along the
outer wall. A gallery allows access the bedrooms and bathrooms, while
also serving as a workspace. From here, all the air spaces can be seen.
The choice of materials is deliberately minimalist: exposed-concrete walls,
plain-colour rubber flooring, built-in furniture in silk-matte black, white
banisters and window frames made of glazed larch. The façade is also
made of local larch wood – carbonized using the Japanese wood preser-
vation method Yakisugi. Three steps lead down from the slightly elevated
kitchen to the living area, which opens onto the terrace to the north wit-
