REBUILD SCHMIEDHOF
IN BERLIN
With the aim of adapting the usability of an industrial
monument to the current living requirements of a family
of four and making typical elements of this architecture
tangible inside, the Berlin architect Christopher Sitz-
ler-Brakel succeeded in the coherent reorganization of
three residential levels in the former Brauereischmiede-
hof in the Viktoria Quartier in Berlin-Kreuzberg.
W hen you step into the newly designed entrance area, the indu-
strial character of the historic building, the connection between
the inside and the outside, can now be experienced straightaway: ele-
ments made of round steel tubing painted in the same industrial green
as the entrance doors, window frames and canopy construction of the
old forge now frame balustrades and staircases in the interior, lead like
a green ribbon to all three levels and, on the upper floor, provide a view
of a previously walled-in historic steel column and beam, which was
uncovered during the renovation and also painted industrial green. The
former two flats measuring approximately 240 square metres, a clear
room height of 2.50 metres and a two-storey level of 4.40 metres were
neither visible nor tangible in the existing building. With two bedrooms
on the ground floor and the dining- and living area on the upper floor,
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan not every family member had their own room, and the private courtyard
at the rear was only accessible via the bedrooms. Christopher Sitzler-
Brakel had some wall sections and all the parapet elements demolished,
thus creating spatial width, new lines of sight, better lighting and he also
reorganized the functions: not only were the children assigned their own
rooms on the upper floor with a spacious gallery and a bathroom tiled
in a brick bond in analogy to the brick-red façade, but the new layout
also provided space for an additional guestroom/study, which is lit and
ventilated via floor-to-ceiling glazing to the double-height entrance area.
Sitzler-Brakel organized the master bedroom and bathroom next to the
living room on the ground floor. Both areas now have an external con-
nection to the private courtyard with a sauna, while the living room and
kitchen also relate to the public outdoor space on the entrance side.
Monochrome, light-coloured cast flooring covers the floors and the stair
steps and subtly connects all the shared areas. Marble covers the white
kitchen island which seems to grow out of the floor and is the elegant
worktop and back-wall panelling of the kitchen unit, whose black cabi-
net fronts define the dimensions of this new family meeting place. And
