D er „Westen“ gilt als eines der beliebtesten Stuttgarter Wohngebiete. Bekannt ist die-
ser Stadtteil für seine vielen kleinen Geschäfte (ganz ohne Einkaufszentrum), sein
rühriges Gastgewerbe und seine lebendige Kunst- und Kulturszene. Alles in historischen
Gebäuden aus der Gründerzeit. Auch viele Innen-/ArchitektInnen betreiben dort ihre
Büros, darunter Milena Romero, die vor zehn Jahren ihr MR Design Studio gründete. In
ihrer Nachbarschaft entwarf sie jüngst ein zweigeschossiges Penthouse-Apartment. Das
ehemalige Druckereigebäude wurde zuvor aufgestockt und beherbergt nun insgesamt
sechs Wohnparteien. Im Dachgeschoss befindet sich der Haupteingang der Maisonette-
Wohnung. Dieser birgt einen kleinen Arbeitsbereich und einen Schuhschrank, der sich
bei Bedarf in ein Gästebett verwandeln lässt. Vergrautes Eichenholz, metallische Akzente
und lackierte Oberflächen schaffen eine willkommen heißende Atmosphäre. Die Küche
begeistert mit ihrer übersichtlichen Gestaltung: Kochfläche, Dunstabzugshaube, Kühl-
schrank, Backofen und Armaturen sind nahtlos in das Gesamtbild integriert. Eleganz
erhält der Raum außerdem durch die filigrane Edelstahlverkleidung des zentralen Insel-
blocks. Maßgefertige Möbel verleihen dem Interieur den letzten Schliff; darunter der
Couchtisch „Rueda Table“ und der handgetuftete Teppich „Frontera Rug“, mit dessen
Design Romero die Grenze zwischen Mexiko und den USA interpretiert.
T he “West” is considered one of Stuttgart’s most popular residential areas. This
neighbourhood is known for its many small shops (there is no shopping centre at
all), bustling hospitality industry and vibrant arts and culture scene, all housed in his-
torical buildings from the Wilhelminian era. Many interior designers and architects also
have their offices there, including Milena Romero, who founded her MR Design Studio
ten years ago. In her neighbourhood, she recently designed a two-storey penthouse apart-
ment. The former building of a printing company was expanded and now accommodates
a total of six residential units. The main entrance to the maisonette is on the attic floor.
This area accommodates a small work area and a shoe cabinet that can be transformed
into a guest bed if needed. Weathered oak wood, metallic highlights and lacquered sur-
faces create a welcoming atmosphere. The kitchen impresses with its sleek design, seam-
lessly integrating the cooking area, extractor hood, refrigerator, oven and fixtures into the
overall aesthetic. The elegance of this space is further enhanced by the filigree stainless
steel cladding of the central kitchen island. Custom-made furniture adds the final touch
to the interior, including the Rueda Table coffee table and the hand-tufted Frontera Rug –
Romero’s design interprets the border between Mexico and the USA.
