W eniger ist manchmal mehr, besonders wenn man mehr Platz für Treffen mit
Freunden braucht und weniger Platz für sich selbst – mag Medha Lim gedacht
haben, als sie die Wohnung am Compassvale Link mitten in Shanghai kaufte! Nicht um
dort zu wohnen, sondern um sich mit Freunden zu treffen und sie zu bewirten – eine Gä-
stewohnung der ganz anderen Art. Ihr gefiel besonders die geschwungene Fassade des
Hochhauses, die sich im Inneren der Wohnung allerdings durch die kleinteilige Gliede-
rung kaum abzeichnete. Die Architekten Woon Chung Yen und Ian Wong Hengjie sahen
das genauso und ließen als erstes eine Wand zwischen Wohn- und Schlafzimmer entfer-
nen. Der nun deutlich wahrnehmbare Fassadenschwung wird unterstützt durch eine um-
laufende Bank, eine innere Kurve, die den großen Raum fasst. Doch ist sie viel mehr als
eine Bank mit reichlich Sitzgelegenheiten und Stauraum – sie verbindet physisch die an-
wesenden Gäste, bietet aber unterschiedlichste Möglichkeiten zur Gruppenbildung. In-
spiriert ist die formale Artikulation der Kurve von der chinesischen Kalligraphie, bei der
ein typischer Strich schwer beginnt und leicht endet. Weshalb der Beginn der Kurve wie
ein Bootsbug geformt ist, dessen skulpturale Form durch den tiefen Schatten betont wird,
und schließlich in einem Aufwärtsschwung endet. Dieser gewinnt als Regal an Dreidi-
mensionalität und stellt gleichzeitig die Schnittstelle zwischen öffentlich und privat dar.

L ess is sometimes more, especially when you need more space to meet friends and
less space for yourself. That’s what Medha Lim may have thought when she bought
the flat at Compassvale Link in the middle of Shanghai. Her intention wasn’t to live
there, but to meet and entertain friends – a special kind of guest flat. She particularly
liked the curved façade of the high-rise building, which, however, was hardly notice-
able inside the flat due to the small-scale layout. The architects Woon Chung Yen and
Ian Wong Hengjie thought the same and first of all had a wall removed between the li-
ving room and the bedroom. The now clearly perceptible sweep of the façade is sup-
ported by an all-round bench, an inner curve that encloses the large room. But it is
much more than a bench with ample seating and storage space – it physically connects
the guests present, while offering a wide variety of opportunities for group formation.
The formal articulation of the curve is inspired by Chinese calligraphy, where a typical
stroke begins heavy and ends light. Which is why the beginning of the curve is shaped
like the bow of a boat, with its sculptural form being emphasised by the deep shadow,
and the end is an upward sweep. This gains three-dimensionality in the form of a shelf
and at the same time represents the interface between public and private areas.
