D as traditionelle Familienmodell – Vater, Mutter, Kind(er) – ist heute nur noch ein Le-
bensmodell unter vielen. Während Politik und Wirtschaft zunehmend darauf rea-
gieren – Stichwort: Diversity Management –, bewegt sich die Architektur jedoch kaum!
Vor allem beim Thema Wohnen verharrt sie in überkommenen Vorstellungen und Kon-
zepten. Dabei verbirgt sich hinter den neuen „diversen“ Lebensentwürfen in unserer Ge-
sellschaft ein enormes Gestaltungspotenzial. Dieses hat der Londoner Architekt Alex
Scott-Whitby jüngst mit seinem Tri-Pod einmal exemplarisch ausgelotet. Entstanden ist
der Entwurf für ein sogenanntes Throuple, eine Dreierbeziehung, über deren genaue Zu-
sammensetzung für die Veröffentlichung Schweigen vereinbart wurde. Die Bauherren-
schaft jedenfalls wünschte sich ein geeignetes Schlafzimmer sowie einen Raum, der allen
Drei bei Bedarf gleichermaßen als Rückzugsort dienen können sollte. Zur Verfügung stan-
den zwei kleine Räume im Obergeschoss eines typischen, zweigeschossigen Londoner
Reihenhauses. Whitby antwortete darauf mit einem Totalumbau: Die beiden Zimmer
wurden aufgelöst und der neu entstandene Großraum bis unters Dach geöffnet. Dort hin-
ein stellte der Architekt anschließend seinen zweigeschossigen, mit Wallnussholz verklei-
deten Tri-Pod. Er beherbergt auf der unteren Ebene ein besonders breites Bett, Stauräume
und eine schmale Treppe. Die offene obere Ebene dient als Yoga-, Whisky- und Leseraum.

T he traditional family model — father, mother, child(ren) — is today only one life
plan among many. While politics and the economy are increasingly reacting to it
— keyword: diversity management —, architecture is hardly responding at all! Particu-
larly with regard to housing solutions, it remains stuck in outdated ideas and con-
cepts. Yet the new 'diverse' lifestyles in our society harbour enormous design poten-
tial. London-based architect Alex Scott-Whitby recently explored this potential with
his Tri-Pod. The result is the design for a so-called throuple, a relationship between
three people, the exact composition of which was agreed to remain a secret in publi-
cations. In any case, the clients wanted a suitable bedroom as well as a room that
could serve all three of them equally well as a place of retreat if required. Two small
rooms were available on the upper floor of a typical two-storey London townhouse.
Whitby responded with a comprehensive conversion: the two rooms were dissolved
and the newly created large room was opened up so it extends all the way to the roof.
The architect then placed his two-storey Tri-Pod, which is crafted from walnut, in this
room. On the lower level it accommodates a particularly wide bed, storage space and
a narrow staircase. The open upper level serves as a yoga, whisky and reading room.
