According to the plans of the Weimar-based architecture firm
Osterwold°Schmidt, an almost 5,000 square metre waste
land in the heart of Erfurt has been filled with new multi-
storey residential buildings in recent years. This development
is called 'Quartier am Dom' (see page 150). The integration of
a suitable percent-for-art project was of great concern to the
clients. The commission was awarded to artist Wolf von Wal-
dow from Berlin. It was his idea to design the nine glass en-
trance doors on the ground floor. In this way, his art can be
seen from both the inside and the outside and thus have an ef-
fect on the "public space". This resulted in nine motifs, three
of which we present in this issue. In terms of content, the
works refer to the history of the site. The artistic process began
with lengthy research in the city archives, interviews with con-
temporary witnesses, and - somewhat out of the ordinary - a
preoccupation with the models created for the architectural
competition. The result is allegorical scenes that are recognis-
able at first glance but cannot always be directly interpreted.
