S ie ist die bevölkerungsreichste Stadt der Südhalbkugel. Zwölf Millionen Menschen
leben im administrativen Stadtzentrum São Paulos. Die Metropolregion dehnt sich
gar auf 21 Millionen Einwohner aus, Tendenz steigend. Eine Verdichtung im vertikalen
Wohnen gilt als Lösungsansatz zur Reduzierung des Wohnraumbedarfs. Im Auftrag des
architektonisch ambitionierten Investors Idea!Zarvos entwarf Triptyque Architecture den
Wohnkomplex POP XYZ, gelegen zwischen nichtssagenden mehrgeschossigen Wohn -
blöcken und dem angesagten Stadtteil Vila Madalena. Kleinteilige, anarchisch gewachsene
Privathäuser prägen das beliebte und belebte Kunst- und Ausgehviertel. Um den neuen
Komplex an dessen Parzellierung anzupassen, gliederte Triptyque das Bau volumen in acht
Wohntürme und einen Kommunikations- und Erschließungsturm. In den 25 Meter hohen
Wohntürmen entstanden auf Grundflächen von nur 7,5 mal 7,5 Quadratmetern verschie-
denste Apartments für die lokale Mittelklasse, 54 bis 109 Quadratmeter groß, teils mit
Dachterrassen, teils Maisonetten. Im Kontrast zu den rauen, aber lebendigen Straßen-
fassaden aus Beton sind die zum begrünten Innenhof orientierten Fassaden pixelartig
gefliest, um das Sonnenlicht zu reflektieren. Interaktion wird großgeschrieben:
Kommunikative Brücken und Laubengänge erschließen die Wohnungen, während Gärten
und Shops im Erdgeschoss auch der Nachbarschaft offen stehen.

I t is the most populated city in the southern hemisphere. Twelve million people live in
São Paulo's administrative centre. The metropolitan region even includes 21 million
inhabitants, and the number is rising. Densification in forms of vertical housing is regarded
as an approach to meeting the demand for living space. Commissioned by the architec-
turally ambitious investor Idea!Zarvos, Triptyque Architecture designed the residential
complex POP XYZ, located between nondescript multi-storey residential blocks and the
trendy Vila Madalena District. The popular and lively art and nightlife neighbourhood is
characterised by small, anarchically emerged houses. To adapt the new complex to the
area’s parcellation, Triptyque divided the building volume into eight residential towers and
one communication and circulation tower. In the 25-metre high residential towers, various
apartments for the local middle class were created on footprints of only 7.5 x 7.5 square
metres; they range in size from 54 to 109 square metres, some have roof terraces and oth-
ers are maisonettes. In contrast to the rough but lively concrete street façades, the façades
oriented towards the green inner courtyard are tiled in a pixel-like manner to reflect the
sunlight. Interaction is of utmost importance: Communicative bridges and arcades provide
access to the apartments, while gardens and shops are also open to the neighbourhood.
