D as Café Sirene in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg ist – ganz anders, als der Name vermuten
lässt – eher leise als laut, eher sanft als schrill. Ohne Blingbling und Effekthascherei
haben Nikitia Marikov und Lennart Zemke, seit 2022 Architektur- und Designbüro RHO,
mit viel Empathie und Respekt vor der Historie den ehemaligen Hausflur eines Gründer-
zeit-Wohnhauses und zwei angrenzende Ladenlokale für ein Café zusammengelegt. Die
Bauherrengemeinschaft hatte sich einen kinderfreundlichen Wohlfühlort gewünscht, an
dem sowohl Cafébetrieb als auch Weinverkostungen stattfinden können. Dazu wurde die
Ladenfläche in drei Zonen aufgeteilt: zentraler Tresen, links davon der Stammtischbereich
und rechts eine lose bestuhlte Sitzzone. Dreh- und Angelpunkt des Farb- und Material-
konzepts ist eben jener Hausflur mit Stuckdecke und Originalzementfliesen im Schach-
brettmuster. Tatsächlich konnten beim Hersteller die Fliesen noch nachgebrannt werden,
und heute kleiden sie als Neuinterpretation jeweils in uni den Tresen in Anthrazit und die
Rückwand in Gelb. Ein eingestelltes Volumen, das Lager und Mitarbeiterraum beinhaltet,
wurde ebenso wie der Cafétresen inklusive Warenpräsentation aus bronziertem – auch
der Akustik wegen – mit Kork verkleideten Stahlelementen entwickelt. Für eine gedämpfte
und natürliche Raumatmosphäre sorgen der edle Lehmstreichputz und die dunkel geölten
Holzoberflächen, für Behaglichkeit eine differenzierte Lichtplanung mit Chromleuchten.
C afé Sirene in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood is – quite different from what
the name suggests – more quiet than loud, more gentle than shrill. Without flashy
elements and gimmicks, Nikitia Marikov and Lennart Zemke, forming the architecture
and design firm RHO since 2022, have combined the former hallway of a Wilhelmini-
an-era apartment building and two adjacent stores to create a café. The client group
wanted a child-friendly feel-good place where both café operations and wine tastings
could take place. To achieve this, the retail space was divided into three zones: a
central counter, a regulars’ area to the left and a loosely arranged seating area to the
right. The centrepiece of the colour and material concept is indeed that hallway with its
stucco ceiling and original checkerboard-patterned cement tiles. In fact, the tiles could
be re-fired by the manufacturer, and today, as a reinterpretation, they clad the counter
in anthracite and the back wall in yellow. An inserted volume containing a storage
area and a staff room, as well as the café counter including product presentation,
were developed using bronzed steel elements clad in cork for acoustic reasons. The
elegant clay lime plaster and dark-oiled wooden surfaces create a muted and natural
atmosphere, while a sophisticated lighting design with chrome fixtures adds cosiness.
