Portuguese architecture studio DC.AD revives the sensual
features of this era. Art Deco with a neon upgrade ...
P ink, purple, turquoise – in combination or in alternation – have
recently been shining in Lisbon’s city centre. Located just a few
hundred metres from the banks of the Tagus river, a bar and restau-
rant was recently opened on the 170-square-metre ground floor of a
three-storey building dating from the early nineteenth century – built
shortly after the disastrous Lisbon earthquake that destroyed around
85 percent of all the city’s buildings. Lulu is reminiscent of the 1920s!
Many aesthetic features of the decade are reflected in the multi-face-
ted selection of colours, patterns and materials. The rhythmic geome-
try of the natural stone floor, whose three colours of pink, dark green
and white are inspired by the façade, creates a visual connection bet-
ween the interior design and the exterior architecture. This could also
be understood as an abstract continuation of the traditional street pa-
ving – the Calçada Portuguesa. Either way, the viewer is made aware
of artful flooring even before entering the bar! The shop-window-like
openings along the front give no clue to the former opaque shutters,
Grundriss • Floor plan but instead allow the predominantly white interior to appear cheerful
and homely in natural light during the day. For the evening hours,
DC.AD in collaboration with Joana Forjaz Lighting Design developed a
changeable lighting concept that transforms the neutral white into a
seemingly fluorescent varnish. At night, the surfaces of the high rooms
glow in powerful neon colours to great effect. Both the colour and in-
tensity can be controlled to create individual and independent atmo-
spheres for the bar, dining and dancing areas. The furniture, which
can be freely arranged and grouped, is likewise designed for a variety
of uses and is suitable for both parties and more intimate dinners for
two. The interior design is dynamic and variant and encourages a
disco-like stay – inviting guests to shake a leg while moving between
the bar stool and the sofa arrangement. The Lisbon-based studio suc-
ceeds in creating a light-heartedly eclectic design that reflects the
lively metropolis in a compressed way and makes the 1920s a contem-
