SUSHI CLUB
IN CESANO MADERNO
„An immersive space, characterized by Fine Asian cuisine, staged against a theatrical backdrop –
dark colours, lines of light and a theatrical this is the secret recipe of Maurizio Lai who, with the
atmosphere, with a clever use of ceramics Sushi Club in Cesano Maderno, designed a restaurant
where, besides expressive elegance and relaxed exclusi-

of colours and materials play the main role, thus making
Maurizio Lai an immersive room possible and appetite for more …
T he architect and designer Maurizio Lai started his career as a stage
designer for international television stations and worked on retail-
and display concepts for several major luxury brands such as Gucci,
Longines or Montblanc. When he finally founded the Lai Studio in Milan
in 1998, he above all attached importance to creating valuable synergies
between architecture and design. This is because, for him, design is not
only about generating forms, atmospheres and experiences but it also
has to serve him as the tool when developing recognizable brands.
Above all his inventive dealing with light plays a fundamental role in all
of his projects – obviously, his roots as a stage designer come to the fore
here. This also goes for the Sushi Club in Cesano Maderno, located ap-
proximately 20 kilometres north of the Milan city centre: As one of five

lumes as well as diffuse lighting and culminates in an omnipresent light
production: Integrated lines of light at the vertical surfaces define an at-
tractive metric which is intensified by a complementing light installation
on the ceiling whereas, in the centre of the room, an almost ceiling-
high sculpture of back-lit, particularly lightweight glass lamellae is en-
veloped by mirrors and additionally emphasizes the radiance of the il-
luminated overall dramaturgy in every direction. The interior furnishing
is in contrast to this: Monochromatically designed in dark, warm co-
lours and materials, theatrical scenarios are produced which are flexi-
ble enough to meet various requirements. Since Maurizio Lai himself
designed the light production as well as the furniture and had it hand-
made, the room concept has an especially consistent look: Every detail
becomes a basic element of the whole – in a play of opposites and con-
trasts, perfect balance and pointed references. All this compares very
