E infach abreißen wollte man das pittoreske Ensemble bunt gemusterter Fassaden der
ehemaligen Fischersiedlung El Cabañal. Anstelle dessen sollte eine stumpfe Verlän-
gerung der Avenida de Blasco Ibañez von der Innenstadt Valencias bis ans Meer führen.
Doch durch den Widerstand von Anwohnern und Denkmalschützern blieb der bedrohte
Küstenkiez erhalten und avancierte zum hippsten Stadtteil Valencias. Jetzt meint man in
der Gestaltung des neuen Imbisses für Meeresspezialitäten „La Sastrería“ durch die hier
beheimateten Designer von Masquespacio eine gehörige Brise Lokalpatriotismus zu
schmecken: Im vorderen, vollumfänglich nach der Art hiesiger Häuserfronten gefliesten
Lokalteil können die Gäste – quasi im erweiterten Stadtraum von Cabañal – auf salonfä-
higen Versionen der für die Nachbarschaft typischen Plastikstühle Platz nehmen. Der hin-
tere, etwas intimere Gastraum, das Fischrestaurant des Kochs Sergio Giraldo, ist dagegen
unübersehbar maritim ausformuliert. Von der wellenförmig verspiegelten Decke über die
geschwungene Polsterung der Rückenlehnen bis hin zu den ultramarin- und sandfarbe-
nen Bodenfliesen schwappt die nahegelegene Balearische See nur so durch den Raum.
Und darauf sollen – ein Einfall von beinahe kindlicher Phantasie – die eigens entworfenen
Holzstühle an die Fischerboote in Cañamelar erinnern. Das ist plakativ, aber gleichzeitig
auch sehr stimmungsvoll! Mehr „Fisch“ kann ein Restaurant kaum schreien.

T he plan had been to simply demolish the picturesque ensemble of colourfully pat-
terned façades of the former El Cabañal fishing settlement to make room for an ex-
tension of the Avenida de Blasco Ibañez from the centre of Valencia all the way to the
sea. But due to the resistance of the residents and the monument conservationists, the
threatened coastal district was preserved and developed into the hippest district of Va-
lencia. In the design of the new La Sastrería snack bar for seafood by the designers of
Masquespacio based here, one now imagines to taste a breeze of local patriotism: In the
front part, completely tiled in the way of the local rows of houses, the guests are able to,
as it were in the extended city space of Cabañal, take a seat on salon-suited versions of
the plastic chairs typical of the neighbourhood. The back, somewhat more private guest
room, the fish restaurant of chef Sergio Girlado, on the other hand, is designed in a cle-
arly maritime style. From the wavy mirrored ceiling to the curved upholstery of the back-
rests to the ultramarine- and sand-coloured floor tiles, the nearby Balearic Sea practically
swashes through the room. And distributed on it – an idea of an almost childlike imagi-
nation – the specifically designed wooden chairs are to remind of the fishing boats in Ca-
ñamelar. This is bold yet, at the same time, also very atmospheric!
