COCKTAILBAR
IN SEVILLE
With the intention of drawing guests' attention to food,
Lucas y Hernández-Gil Arquitectos designed the Casa-
plata restaurant as a room made of steel, concrete, and
neon light, which is reminiscent of futuristic films such
as "Blade Runner" and historic paintings by artist
Giorgio Morandi — and at the same time offers an inge-
nious stage for Sevilla's best traditional cuisine.
A long with Jean Siméon Chardin and Paul Cézanne, Giorgio
Morandi is one of the most important painters of still lifes.
Art historian Vitale Bloch once commented on his work with the
words: "It happens that Morandi's still lifes seem melancholic
and romantic, tender and yielding in their conception and execution;
at times powerful, the majority are restrained in colour and
chiaroscuro. And what then changes is the reciprocal, almost
'interpersonal' relationship of the objects." These are thoughts
that are over 60 years old and could not have described the
design of the architects Lucas y Hernández-Gil any better.
The Madrid-based designers were inspired by the works of the
Italian artist and created a restaurant in Sevilla's old town,
where the sometimes ascetic but nevertheless sensual style of
the painter was transferred to the room. The raw concrete
surfaces serve as canvases against which the compositions of
pastel-coloured furniture and circular luminous elements
deliberately stand out: Seats, whose colours range from butter
yellow to pale pink and tomato red, are combined with perforated
metal tables in mint green and Yves Klein blue - apart from the
Marcel Breuer chairs, these are designs created by the designers under
the Krestadesign label and, above all, captivate with
their geometric design vocabulary. As a clear motif, the circle
is not only used for furniture and lighting, but also for mirrors
and wall openings to continually offer up to 70 guests new perspec-
tives of the perfectly staged still life. Even though the restaurant
with cocktail bar that opened in January 2018 will remain
anything but still: Thanks to the play of colours and reflections,
the 140-square metre room undergoes constant transformation
throughout the day. In addition, DJs play their music in the evening
hours and users of the tourism website TripAdvisor also recommend
new guests to make sure they visit the retro-futuristic
