K unst trifft auf Popkultur und Digitalität! Elemente, die scheinbar nicht zusammenpas-
sen, galt es in dem Konzept für das Café Pong im NRW-Forum im Düsseldorfer Ehren -
hof zu vereinen. Innerhalb des streng symmetrischen und archaisch wirkenden Bau -
werkes – 1926 von Wilhelm Kreis (1873–1955) für die GeSoLei-Ausstellung entworfen –
besetzt es dessen architektonische Mitte. Doch nicht nur in Bezug auf die expressionisti-
sche Architektur stellt das Café einen Mittelpunkt dar, auch innerhalb des Anforde rungs -
feldes soll es als urbanes Zentrum – als Restaurant, Bar, Café und Eventplatz – dienen. Dies
stellte Studio Komo vor die Herausforderung, der ehemaligen Verkehrsfläche eine vielsei-
tige Nutzung mit hoher Aufenthaltsqualität zu verleihen. Die doppelläufige Treppe und der
elf Meter hohe Kuppelbau waren dabei prägend für das neue Innenleben. Ein Podest mit
Sitzbank nimmt die Rundung der Treppe auf und erweitert zugleich die ovale Form der
Primärkonstruktion sowie das Angebot an Sitzbereichen. Auf der gegenüberliegenden
Seite übernimmt diese Aufgabe ein Bestelltresen mit geschwungener Bar. Hochtische und
Loungemöbel komplettieren das Zentrum und ermöglichen eine schnelle, bedarfsorien-
tierte Umgestaltung. Materialien wie Holz und Kork sowie Textil– und Polsterelemente set-
zen poppig-farbige und haptische Akzente und verbessern die Akustik. Das Café-Konzept
vereint gekonnt „Popkultur & Gastro“ sowie Historie und neuzeitliche Nutzung.

A rt meets pop culture and digitality! In the concept for the Café Pong in the NRW
Forum in the Düsseldorf Ehrenhof, elements which seem not to go together were to
be combined. Inside the strictly symmetrical and archaic looking building – designed by
Wilhelm Kreis (1873-1955) in 1926 for the GeSoLei exhibition – it takes up the architectural
centre. But not only as regards the expressionist architecture does the café represents a
focus, as to its uses as well it is to serve as an urban centre – as a restaurant, bar, café
and an event venue. For Studio Komo, this meant the challenge of giving the former cir-
culation area many uses with high quality of stay. The double-flight stairs and the eleven
metres high domed structure determine the new look of the interior. A platform with a
seating bench reflects the curvature of the stairs and, at the same time, extends the oval
shape of the primary construction as well as increasing the seating options. On the oppo-
site side, this task is accomplished by an order counter with a curved bar. High tables and
lounge furniture complement the centre and make a quick, needs-oriented rearrangement
possible. Materials such as wood and cork as well as textile and upholstery elements add
trendy-colourful and haptic accents and improve the acoustics. The concept of the café
skilfully combines “pop culture & gastronomy” as well as history and modern usage.
