HOTEL BALLGUTHOF
IN LANA
In the middle of wine and fruit plantations, with the
Dolomites in the background – this is how most holi-
daymakers in South Tyrol imagine the location of their
hotel. This is also the case at the Hotel Ballguthof,
where contemporary meets traditional architecture
and a hotel and its new building merge with the sur-
rounding nature in an unusual way.
A t first, the guest of the depandance of Hotel Ballguthof in Lana
is surprised by an unusual view. The new building, which was
completed last year, has little to do with the existing building, which
visually blends into the surrounding landscape of houses in the
Tyrolean Alps. But the architects of the Brixen-based architectural
office bergmeisterwolf – Gerd Bergmeister and Michaela Wolf – have

with its valleys, mountains, rivers, lakes, and forests. They have cho-
sen materials, colours, and shapes for the annexe that may differ
from those of other buildings in the region, but at the same time cap-
ture nature and harmoniously blend with it. In-situ concrete with
dark pigments is the main material. The contours of the roofs –
sometimes flat, sometimes pointed – play with the surrounding land-
scape, merge with it and re-model it. In winter, the dark roof tips
almost disappear between the reflections of the mountains in the
glass façade elements, in summer, they contrast them. Planted green
roofs strengthen the visual integration into nature. Terraces and log-
gias, whose railings wind partly around partitions and columns and
create a dynamic body, provide intimate areas. This game continues
also inside. Here, too, raw concrete is visible almost everywhere, but
