                                                                                        Hotels are no longer mere overnight accommodations,
                                                                                        they are becoming urban refuges with a high interior
                                                                                        quality - contact points for both travellers and residents
                                                                                        of a city. Like the Hotel Kitz in Metzingen. Designed by
                                                                                        krampulz meyer architekten, the house sees itself as a
                                                                                        large shared apartment where the common rooms are
                                                                                        staged as an open-plan living room.


                                                                                        M    ore than four million customers from over 185 nations shop in
                                                                                             the Metzingen Outlet City every  year.  They come from the
                Erdgeschoss • Ground floor                                              surrounding area as well as from China, South Korea or Switzerland
                                                                                        to find not only perfectly tailored men's suits, unusual designer
                                                                                        handbags or discounted luxury products, but also a bed for the night.
                                                                                        It is no longer a secret that the medium-sized town at the foot of the
                                                                                        Swabian Alb often reaches its limits in this respect, and com-
                                                                                          fortable overnight accommodation is rare. Since December 2017,
                                                                                        Hotel Kitz  with its 23 rooms can provide a small remedy here.
                                                                                        Located in the middle of the old town, the new building blends into
                                                                                        the contrasting fields of tradition and modernity. Stuttgart-based
                                                                                        architects Benjamin Krampulz and Michael Meyer have succeeded in
                                                                                        dealing sensitively with the existing surrounding development, rein-
                                                                                        terpreting and thus linking it to the design of the modern outlets: This
                                                                                        is reflected in the elaborated base of the three-storey building, the
                                                                                        modern interpretation of the wooden window elements with folding
                1./2. Obergeschoss • 1st/2nd floor                                      shutters and the reduced, geometrically clear saddle roof  without
                                                                                        roof overhang. In the interior, too, the designers play with compatible
                                                                                        contrasts and so, thanks to also Stuttgart-based interior designer
                                                                                        Monika Hesprich, "charming natural purity is combined with urban-
                                                                                        ity and simple elegance with a love of detail". This is particularly evi-
                                                                                        dent in the hotel’s discreetly designed individual rooms: while the
                                                                                        ceilings of the guest rooms are constructed from transparent glazed
                                                                                        precast  concrete elements  and  the  floors from  sanded  cement
                                                                                        screed, all wall cladding and almost all fixtures are made from plain
                                                                                        birch plywood. All these rooms are complemented by the open
                                                                                        reception area on the ground floor, which also serves as a lobby,
                                                                                        breakfast area, and bar. In this heart of the building, the retro style
                                                                                        of the 1960s with Scandinavian influences and the consistent use of
                                                                                        the colour green are not only intended to symbolize the proximity to
                                                                                        nature, but also to refer to the "urban jungle", which is after all only
