A ufgrund großflächiger Zerstörungen der Hochschulbauten fielen in der Zeit nach
dem Zweiten Weltkrieg Neustrukturierungen der Universität Stuttgart an. Insti t ute
mit großem Platzbedarf wurden demnach von der Stadtmitte in das Gebiet des Vaihinger
Pfaffenwalds ausgelagert. In den folgenden Jahren entstand dort eine neu ge baute
Studierendenstadt mit Instituts gebäuden, Wohn heimen und Mensen. Darunter be fand
sich auch das ingenieurwissenschaftliche Zentrum – kurz IWZ – mit einer Cafe ter ia. Dieser
sah man mittlerweile ihre lange Geschichte an und so wurde 2015 der Entschluss gefasst,
das Innen archi tektur büro ZieglerBürg mit einer Umgestaltung zu be auf tragen. Der in
einem Stu den ten wettbewerb ausgelobte Name verrät bereits das Motto des neuen
Innen raumdesigns der Cafeteria: Kontraste! Die Komplemen tär farben Grün und Magenta
tref fen auf schwarze und weiße Möbel, Einbauten und Grafiken, die in Zusammenarbeit
mit dem Büro Uebele entstanden. Betonsäulen mit Leuchten und einige Back stein -
mauern wurden dabei erhalten. Die Anordnung der Aufenthalts flächen auf unter-
schiedlichen Ebenen greift das aktuelle Konzept ebenfalls auf und nutzt diese, um Be -
reiche mit unterschiedlichen Qualitäten zu schaffen. So entstehen Sitz gelegen heiten für
Groß- und Kleingruppen, ruhige Arbeitsbereiche, Stehtische, an denen kleine Mahlzeiten
eingenommen werden können, sowie Sofalandschaften für ausgiebige Kaffeepausen.

D ue to the extensive destruction of university buildings, the University of Stuttgart
was in need of restructuring after the Second World War. Institutes with large
space requirements were relocated from the city centre to the area of the Pfaffenwald
in Stuttgart-Vaihingen. In subsequent years, a newly constructed university campus
with institute buildings, halls of residence and canteens was implemented there. One
of the buildings was the Engineering Science Centre (IWZ) with a cafeteria. Meanwhile,
one could tell its long history simply by looking at the building, and that is why the
decision was taken in 2015 to commission the interior design office ZieglerBürg with a
restructuring. The name mentioned in the student competition already bespeaks the
motto of the cafeteria’s new interior design: Contrasts! The complementary colours
green and magenta are combined with black and white furniture, built-in units and
graphics, which were originated in collaboration with the office Uebele. Concrete
columns with lighting fixtures and several brick walls were maintained. The arrange-
ment of the common areas on different levels also takes up the current concept and
uses it to create areas with different qualities. The result are seating accommodations
for large and small groups, quiet working areas, high tables where people can take a
small meal as well as sofa landscapes for extensive coffee breaks.
