insulated with 24 centimetres of mineral wool, are 37 centimetre thick, including the
timber lathing. The double-layered ventilated flat roof, including the rafter layer, has
a 50-centimetre structure with a 37-centimetre insulation layer in the module ceiling.
The roof covering consists of substrate. In addition, the city had a photovoltaic system
installed. The total of 30 modules were largely completed in the factory. On-site, joints
had to be covered, seams between the modules closed, and the floating subfloor
poured. Nevertheless, construction works only took seven months. Analogous to the Querschnitte • Transversal sections
models from Switzerland, there was a clear separation between the construction and
the installations of HVAC systems at the Fuchshof School. The proven low-tech concept
with connector fans and air conditioning units from Kegel Klimasysteme was used. It
allows for efficient energy use and ensures a good indoor climate. The corridors are
used as supply and exhaust air ducts for ventilation of the main rooms. A ventilation
unit with a heat exchanger in the technical room draws in fresh air and blows it into
the lower third of the corridor. This creates a cooler air layer at floor level. This layer
is guided to the main rooms by connector fans due to a slight negative pressure. Ansicht Nord • View from north
There, the air layer warms up, rises and is returned to the ceiling area of the corridor
and to the central unit. Special air conditioning units mounted below the windows
are used for heating and cooling. Due to the good insulation and pre-conditioned air,
it is possible to operate in winter with a flow temperature of 26 degrees Celsius and
in summer with 22 degrees Celsius. This allows for efficient use of the air-water heat
pump and keeps energy consumption low. The Schorndorf example shows how high-
quality modular buildings quickly enable the provision of contemporary school space. Ansicht Süd • View from south
