Ein Großteil der historischen Türen konnte gerettet werden. • The majority of the historic doors have been salvaged.

window areas to the north, light is channelled into the central hall from above. The
corner facing Technikumplatz 2 is given a special emphasis with the corner glazing
in the style of the demolished corner avant-corps with a “tower”. The new library
has only a few, large window openings that produce targeted visual references. The
additional windows are deliberately placed outside the existing façade structure
and across the storeys, clearly indicating “something new is happening here”. The Grundriss 1. Obergeschoss • Floor plan level +1
former ballroom, later converted into a cinema, still forms the centre of the building.
Parts of the salvaged plaster stucco parapet panelling have been reinstalled here,
also salvaged and refurbished doors. Precisely fitted bookcases envelop the hall
with their new function, creating atmosphere and allowing the building to transiti-
on naturally into its new use. The choice of materials for the bookshelves and wall
panelling is limited to oak, whereas the floor coverings are also smoked oak on the
ground floor and woven textile on the upper floors. An open triangular grid ceiling
was used for the ceiling panelling, which can be inspected over the entire area and
thus keeps the technical installations such as ventilation- and pipework systems,
fire-alarm systems and acoustic-absorber surfaces permanently accessible. For the
grid ceiling, the architects developed an insert system into which downlights, safety
lighting and signalling devices in case of fire are integrated. In the exhibition for
the library’s name-giver Erich Löst, a café was set up with chairs and bistro tables.
SoftWork sofas invite library visitors to sit down and read. The building can be used
barrier-free according to the multi-sensory principle. The lift is integrated into the
historic staircase and the building is now, as the library director likes to say, “the
living room of the city”. Grundriss 2. Obergeschoss • Floor plan level +2
