DAY CARE CENTRE
IN BADEN-BADEN
Childcare places are rare in this country. For years, pa-
rents have desperately been looking. It is thus more
than welcome to find increasingly new buildings. So
the city of Baden-Baden expands its offerings: the Kel-
tenweg day care. With its clear room structure, the stri-
king brick building by Schweikert Schilling Architekten
is a protected space for little explorers.
S ween the ages of one and six have been happily frolicking
ince May of last year, on weekdays approximately 64 children bet-
through the light-flooded rooms of the Keltenweg day care facility. In
2017, Nicolai Schweikert and Alexander Schilling had won the compe-
tition which the city of Baden-Baden had organized. Their proposed
way of dealing with the completely green hillside property in a hete-
rogenous residential area was able to convince the jury just as much
as the spatial organization of the facility. By positioning the building
volume parallel to the western property line and thus on the side of
the valley, a generous outdoor area has been produced on the hill in
the east. On three sides, he two-storey building is surrounded by a
bright brick façade on three sides and there are just a few windows.
In the north, where the children are arriving, the outer wall merges
into a wall which shelters the playground in the east. The façade to-
wards the garden is fully glazed, the link with nature is everywhere. A
pergola here marks the transition from inside to outside and offers a
weather-protected exterior space before getting to the hill playground
with its old trees. Inside as well, the architects stay true to their design
metaphor “hard shell, soft core”. Warm materials, plenty of light and
abundant perspectives turn the building into an extensive exercise
scenery where the little ones can give free rein to the unlimited plea-
sure they always take in frolicking. The dynamic names given to the

and Cheetahs – already suggest that active movement ranks first in
this day care. Starting from a generous central hallway, all the areas
on both floors of the elongated building can be accessed. In the west,
besides the commonly used zones such as multipurpose-, a dining-
and a movement room, there are several secondary rooms as well. In
the east, the group rooms with an unobstructed view of the garden
are clearly arranged in a row. The resulting easy orientation helps the
children to get their bearings in the semi-open care concept which al-
