sprudelnden Gebetshauszentrums. Denn es geht eben nicht nur um stille Versen-
kung, sondern auch um Gemeinschaft und Miteinander. Den Mittelpunkt des Gebets-
hauses bildet deshalb ein Platz, an dem sich alle internen Wege kreuzen und der das
Foyer und ein schickes Café umfasst. Hunderte von Glühbirnen pendeln in unter-
schiedlichen Höhen von der Decke. Eine scheinbar endlos lange Theke aus Sichtbe-
ton bildet die klassische Rezeption für die Gäste, diese Theke zieht sich nahtlos
durch den gesamten Raum und fungiert so auch als Theke des Cafés. Im Zentrum
des Cafés steht ein massiver Eichentisch, dekoriert mit bunten Punktleuchten, die
den Raum in ein warmes und behagliches Licht tauchen und zu geselligem Verwei-
len animieren. Die ganze Rückwand des Cafés ist mit Mosaikfliesen verkleidet und
bildet zusammen mit einer davor stehenden langen Sitzbank die Kulisse für kleine
Cafétische mit eingelassenen Schirmlämpchen. Ein Ort, der weit entfernt ist von klö-
sterlicher Stille, der jedoch den Rahmen für entspannte Begegnung schafft. Kaum
einmal wird in einer Beschreibung der Architektur eines Gebäudes über die Toilet-
ten berichtet, schon gar nicht, wenn es sich um einen sakralen Komplex handelt.
Beim Gebetshaus Augsburg führt daran jedoch kein Weg vorbei. Zu einzigartig sind
diese profanen Orte menschlicher Bedürfnisse in diesem Fall gestaltet. Ist der Vor-
raum zu den WCs noch in schlichtem Betongrau und Anthrazit gehalten, überrascht
die Besucher jede einzelne Kabine mit einer humorvollen, farbigen Ausgestaltung.
Diese reicht zum Beispiel von den großen Augen einer Milchkuh über ein Camoufla-
gemuster oder chinesische Propagandaplakate bis hin zum Renaissancegemälde.
Und so finden sich immer wieder euphorische Kommentare auf den Social-Media-
Seiten des Gebetshauses, die von den beeindruckenden visuellen Erlebnissen auf
den Toiletten handeln. Das Gebetshaus Augsburg bildet einen einzigartig gestalteten
Mikrokosmos, dessen Lebendigkeit sich völlig von den Erwartungen, die der Besu-
cher im Voraus wohl an ein modernes Kloster stellen würde, unterscheidet. Anna

den man nicht mehr verlassen möchte.“ Und genau solch ein Ort ist im Gebetshaus

I n the midst of a commercial zone, a mundane former fitness centre has been tur-
ned into an attractive and lively place of worship where, for now almost eight
years already, prayers are continuously said around the clock, by day as well as by
night. Prayers in a very wide sense, it has to be added. Freely improvised music and
a warm atmosphere are the factors which invite to a highly personal kind of spiri-
tuality. Anyone is allowed to come and nobody is forced to come, of course. It is a
place that radiates creativity and joy, on 365 days of the year, around the clock. No
wonder that the Gebetshaus is Augsburg is attracting thousands of visitors. In two
construction phases, the present building ensemble resulted from the plain commer-
cial cuboid. In a first step, the old fitness centre was turned into the Gebetshaus, the
floor plan was newly structured and complemented with a café. As part of a second,
recently completed construction project, the building was extended with a guest-
house with so-called prayer homes and a chapel as a place of tranquillity. The
prayer room is definitely the heart of the centre: “A room made of light where pray-
ers do not end by day and by night. Designed in white and warm shades of gold, the
prayer room emanates something which is felt to be almost supernatural. Comple-
tely different from a traditional church but inviting to linger. At times, it is loud and
groovy in here, then again completely quiet and contemplative. At times many
people are praying here, at other times, there are just a few. But all that counts is
paying attention to God who can be experienced here. Somewhat like a room out-
side of space and time.” In cooperation with a Swiss outfitter, the room was lined
with white, semi-transparent Reverso wall covering which consists of paper and can
be flexibly designed. With the help of light, this delicate envelope makes it possible
to produce different moods and creates a sublime ambience, as if the sky and the
