D as Umfeld des Universitätscampus am Stadtrand von La Laguna im Nordosten der
In sel Teneriffa bildet einen heterogenen Mix aus Vorstadtsiedlung, Autobahnstreifen
und Industriegebiet. Angesichts der isolierten Lage des neuen Fakultätsgebäudes für Bil -
den de Künste haben gpy arquitectos ein introvertiertes Kon zept entwi ckelt, das im Innen -
hof öffentliche Freiräume schafft und so den Außen be zug ersetzt. Gefasst von einer
durch ge hen den, geschwungenen Au ßen kante, ent steht ein or ganischer Ge bäu de kom -
plex, der im Bereich des Hauptzugangs eine auf die Topografie abgestimmte Ausstülpung
als Vorplatz bildet. Während sich der Bau nach außen hin in strenger Horizontalität prä -
sen tiert, lebt das Innere vom Kontrast zwischen bau li cher „Ein fassung“, in der die Funk -
tio nen untergebracht sind, und Innenhof, der mit zentraler Erschließungs ram pe, schlei -
fen förmigem Wegesystem und be grün ten Patios Auf ent halts flächen anbie tet. Mas sive Be -
ton brüstungen dominie ren mit einer starken Scha lungs struktur das Erschei nungsbild
und unterstreichen die skulpturale Form des Baukörpers. Mit großen Decken hö hen, in -
di rekter Belichtung und der ehrlichen Ober flä chen qua lität des Betons erzeugen die Ate -
lier räume einen typischen Werkstattcharakter, ohne dabei grob zu wirken. Sie lassen sich
mit flexiblen Wänden nach Bedarf zusammenschließen und bilden einen zu rück hal -
tenden, ästhetischen Rahmen, der die hier entstehende Kunst in den Vordergrund stellt.

T he setting of the university campus on the outskirts of La Laguna in the north-
east of the island of Tenerife is a heterogeneous mixture of suburbia, highways
and industrial zone. In view of the isolated location of the new faculty building of
Fine Arts, gpy arquitectos came up with a self-contained concept which offers public
open-air spaces in the courtyard and thus replaces the link to the outdoors. Framed
by a continuous, curved exterior edge, an organic building complex thus results
which, in the area of the main entrance, forms a projection as a forecourt which is
in line with the topography. While, from the outside, the building looks strictly hor-
izontal, the interior profits from the contrast between the architectural “frame” with
the zones for various functions and the inner courtyard offering recreational areas
with its central access ramp, looping paths and green patios. Massive concrete para-
pets dominate the appearance with their strong formwork structure and emphasize
the sculptural shape of the building. With large ceiling heights, indirect lighting and
the honest surface quality of the concrete, the studio rooms produce a typical work-
shop atmosphere without looking rough in any way. They can be joined with flexible
walls if necessary and create a low-key, aesthetic setting that puts the art created
here in the foreground.
